About this deal

Regardless of which path of the game you choose, if you select a path through the game that lines you up with the timing of scorings and you do turns where you set yourself up to get a lot of stuff, you’ll generally do OK. When playing with new players, you have to explain all of these systems for them to have a chance to do well. Players guide the development of their tribes across several generations—from nomadic hunter-gatherers to prosperous tribal societies.

It is a quintessentially modern hobbyist game that has clearly seen meticulous development and playtesting, and a game where there are many pathways to victory. Our ultimate guide to board game cafes has everything you need to know about what a board game cafe is, or how to find one in your area!

The premise of EW is that you’re managing a tribe of cave people (I’m no scientist, but this game has no pretensions towards any kind of historical or scientific fidelity), and you wanna grow that tribe, build camps, and probably lay down some big flat megalith stones. As long as you pursue a pathway through the game, you’ll find yourself entering the fourth and final round of the game ready to do some serious combos. Over the course of the game, tribes migrate and settle new lands, establish cultural traditions, hunt paleolithic megafauna, and build everlasting megalithic structures. Four different actions, and four ways to get end-game victory points: animals collected, tribespeople buried, leftover resources, and points on cards. Similar to the reveal turn from Dune: Imperium, players reveal any cards they contributed to the eclipse.I’m curious to try some of the expansions released with the game because my main criticism of the game is that it’s pretty hard to mess up, be outfoxed, or make mistakes, and because of the balance of everything in the game, winning feels more like an afterthought. Endless Winter is a similar worker placement deck-building hybrid to both Dune: Imperium, and Lost Ruins of Arnak. Again, trying to explain exactly how everything works would take a long time and will not really give you a better sense of how the game works, but the core decision loop of much of what you do is a balancing act. All of these decisions add to a simple, and yet complex ecosystem of different mechanisms that are just a joy to play with. We aim to reply within 1 hour, however depending on the number of queries it may take us slightly longer to get back to you!

So it becomes this idea where you don’t want to put powerful cards in there, but you weren’t going to see it that often anyways. Each round, players send their tribe members to various action spaces, and pay for actions by playing cards and spending resources. I think someone younger than 12 could play this game but I’m not sure if they’d be up to the level of planning necessary to do well. The final thing you do each round is form an eclipse pile to sustain your tribe during a harsh eclipse that is coming. As a synthesis or greatest hits of many popular mechanics from the past few years, EW is a major success.

Designed by Stan Kordonskiy (Dice Hospital, Rurik, Lock Up), developed by Jonny Pac (Coloma, Sierra West, Lions of Lydia), solo mode by Drake Villareal (Solani, Spook Manor), and illustrated by The Mico (Raiders of the North Sea, Paladins of the West Kingdom, Valeria), Endless Winter: Paleoamericans takes place in North America, around 10,000 BCE. It adds a large variety of new cards into the game, including alternate animals cards, interactive Culture cards, Chief special ability cards, and more. Endless Winter takes up a lot of space to play, and I think a lot of people will have trouble finding the space to play it. Though you may not be able to find four of your stones in the right place to get the full eight points.
