About this deal

Fortaleza has only been operating since 2005, but the family behind it can trace its origins back to Don Cenobio Sauza, the ‘father of Tequila’, who opened his first distillery in 1873, established Sauza Tequila and was one of the pioneers of the drink’s global reputation. Agaves are sourced from the Tequila Valley with double distillation in copper pots to 80% proof, before blending with natural spring water from the valley for bottling. Presented in a hand-blown in Tonala, Jalisco by artisan glassmakers, the labour-intensive blend is unequaled in taste and smoothness. Slightly brighter and a touch more rustic than the regular blanco, the accents of butter, olive, earth, black pepper, and vegetal qualities in the flavour are enhanced because it comes straight from our small copper pot still, without adding water prior to bottling.

Bottled in hand-blown bottles, Fortaleza is as close as you’re going to get to what Tequila tasted like 100 years ago. In a similar way to Scotch Whisky the terrain, area and soil all shape the character and taste of the tequila, as a result of how it affects the agave plant. Pineapple chunks and mango continue onto the opulent palate, where a whisper of earthiness and a pinch of anise carry through to an elegant, persistent finish. Fortaleza is distilled twice in two 100-year-old copper pot stills and the Blanco is rested in stainless steel tanks for a couple of days before spring water is added.Initially owning and running three local distilleries, Guillermo’s grandfather closed ‘La Fortaleza’ in 1968, turning it into a museum showcasing the history of tequila production. In 1999, Don Guillermo began the process of restoring his family’s old distillery, Destileria La Fortaleza, which was retired in 1968 in favor of more ‘efficient’ facilities. Using 150-year-old methods and traditional equipment, the agaves are slowly cooked in a brick oven over 2 days.
