About this deal

There definitely aren’t as many games that include so many players successfully, so hats off to Unstable Unicorns. Ability text on party leaders and monsters is so small that it often goes forgotten, however, which feels like a bit of a flaw. I often play Here to Slay as a two-player game with my husband – we used to remove hero cards from the deck to make it more suitable for a 2-player game. Thankfully, Here to Slay brings a bit more control to the proceedings, with the beautifully cute creatures here – rather than simply being put in play to fill a ‘stable’ – forming RPG-style parties and slaying oversized monsters.

Speaking of those monsters, they’re a less cute collection of nicely designed creatures that come with powerful effects if you slay them, though there’s also a detriment in most cases if you roll under a specific target number.

It balances the different actions really well (making attacking monsters a high-stakes, all or nothing move) and allows players to have big turns playing lots of cards or draw several cards at once when they start running low.

It’s refreshing to have more options on the table and each strategy tends to be pretty viable at most points of the game.

But with the Warrior and Druid expansion cards, trying to collect 8 heroes was a much better challenge and enabled a fairer contest. Here to Slay is a competitive role-playing fantasy strategy card game that's all about assembling a party of Heroes and slaying monsters (and sometimes sabotaging your friends too) from the creators of Unstable Unicorns. Players have the ability to play item cards which can either boost their own party or curse other party players giving them a negative effect, on top of this there are also modifier cards which give a positive or negative value to players roll if they had just successfully rolled to defeat a monster this card can be played to tip the odds in your favour and stop them from taking the win! Druid Deer protect your army, such as ‘Maegisty’ and ‘Doe Fallow’ … took me too long to figure that one out. Taken for what it is – a light, fun and interactive game that you can teach to almost anyone, I don’t hesitate to recommend Here to Slay.

None of this vastly changes the gameplay and is really just some bonus items for backing the project. Turns proceed and players scrap over each other’s sets before eventually, someone hits one of the win conditions and ends the game. For example, an 8+ roll is a successful roll and a 5- is a failed roll) Kill three unique monsters, and you win the game! Again like its stablemate (pun intended), Here to Slay’s visual design and overall production quality is hard to criticise, with wonderful illustrations and nicely designed packaging throughout. In this game, you can keep a modifier card up your sleeve (or, well, in your hand) to make sure the odds always tip in your favor. There’s no pressure of course, but every penny helps to keep this site running, as I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages). You can’t really plan ahead because, at any moment, a failed die roll or unexpected card from an opponent could derail your plans.
