Instead, she chose to throw in a subplot involving a disembodied head who looks like one of Dany's favorite anime/manga characters, and to my mind this drags the whole book down. While it has an interesting premise--a lonely, middle school girl finds a magic notebook that makes her drawings literally come to life--the execution left something to be desired. David knows he needs a kite to fit in at Fivehills, but, when other kids tell him it's not quite right, will he follow his own path or go against his instincts?
