About this deal

Enlightenment is not about *getting rid* of neurosis, it is simply getting to *know* that neurosis, with understand and compassion.

If you're looking for a book that makes a case for giving mindfulness a chance kind of abstracted from the values Headspace asks you to embrace, I'd instead I'd recommend checking out the relevant chapter of The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt. About the Author: Sarah Rudell Beach became a mother in 2006, embarking on a powerful journey in both motherhood and mindfulness. She has had a personal mindfulness practice for many years now, holds a master's degree in education, and is a Mindful Schools Certified Instructor. It is divided by trimester and has chapters on general mindfulness, labour/birth and your relationship with your baby.

This book had moments of good advice within it, but some of the advice would have been better received if it had been written by the women with whom the author had consulted, not writing it from a man’s perspective. I grazed a couple but started to feel overwhelmed by what I might learn and fearful the more I read about miscarriage.

I would highly recommend this book for pregnant people who are already knowledgeable about the physiological aspects of childbirth and are seeking a more holistic approach to pregnancy and birth. We didn’t have time to get to a doctor before leaving so we bought a few pregnancy books before our travels.

We were both almost 35 and heard conception stories ranging from ‘happily by mistake’ to years of intervention and recurrent miscarriages.Compared with groups of women who simply read about other women’s positive and negative experiences during pregnancy, or did nothing specific at all, women in the mindfulness group saw greater increases in their reports of well-being and positive feelings like enthusiasm and determination across the duration of the exercise. Finally, Sarah shows how mindfulness practices learnt during pregnancy can be taken into motherhood, so that you can live in the moment with your new baby. If you find mindfulness helpful, then this book about how to apply it to fertility, pregnancy, parenthood, and loss seems pretty useful, and I'd definitely recommend it. Trimester by trimester, this beautiful book gives you safe yoga, meditation, natural remedies, nutrition and hypnobirthing techniques to match your stage of pregnancy. There is also a “compassion meditation” that encourages tuning in to one’s emotions and focusing on one’s relationships. It didn't put me off that this was written by a man, however, I don't think a lot of readers will appreciate the anecdotes of his wife Lucinda breezing through pregnancy - hardly gaining any weight and tying herself in knots doing yoga. Tracy is a popular guest speaker, representing GentleBirth at conferences around the world, and is at the forefront of the global positive birth movement.Jen, an entrepreneur friend of mine who recently had her first child, was put on bed rest and couldn’t even exercise to keep her stress down. It is inspiring to witness a mother with extreme fear of childbirth cancel an elective caesarian because she now feels confident enough in her own strength to go through the birthing process,” said one mindfulness teacher. But for students who are grappling with anxiety about their pregnancy or parenthood, or who are looking outside the box for prenatal information, I think this book could have a large benefit. These were all women who had sought therapy or counseling for mood issues in the past, but the program seemed to be helping them avoid similar difficulties during a chaotic and transformative time of their lives. In that way, it’s a bit like parenting: something you work on day by day, even on the bad days when it seems like nothing is going right.
