In the mid-20th century, the story developed that the fair originated with a royal charter to the borough of Appleby from King James II of England in 1685. However, 17th-century Appleby owed much to widowed Lady Anne Clifford, who made a refurbished Appleby Castle her principal home and rebuilt both parish churches and much of Boroughgate. For the 19th century engineers, the landscape presented a challenge of their skills and abilities, with the railway being built by men who lived harsh lives in shanty towns, with little to supplement their manpower except dynamite. The parish church of St Lawrence is Grade I listed and showcases a mix of Medieval architecture from different periods. The strong tradition of milk, butter and cheese production led to the establishment of the Appleby Express Creamery in 1931. You can enjoy traditional a ‘pub grub’ lunch or dinner including Cumberland Sausage alongside a pint of hand pulled ale.

Washing the horses at Appleby Horse Fair Caravans, including horse-drawn Vardoes at the Fair Horses wading in the river Eden. Our fabulous 1871 Bistro was created to complement our existing fine dining restaurant and benefits from a fantastic outlook over the Eden Valley with views of Appleby Castle to the Lake District fells in the distance. The creamery trains their staff in traditional cheese making methods and recipes, using Cow’s ,Goat’s and Ewe’s milk to produce a distinctive and characterful range of soft cheeses such as blue, brie and smoked brie alongside hard varieties including cheddar and Caerphilly-style cheeses. Most horse trading takes place at the crossroads (known to the local authority as 'Salt Tip Corner') and on Long Marton Road (known to the Gypsies and Travellers as the 'flashing lane'), where horses are shown off (or 'flashed') by trotting up and down at speed. Appleby is in close proximity of some stunning wild swimming spots, from open water swims in Ullswater to little dips in the River Lowther and Eden. The Romans marched through this valley between Carlisle and Brough: traces of one of the finest settlements in the northwest are at Ewe Close, made up of a series of hut circles and enclosure walls. The most popular route up to England’s highest point (outside of the Lake District), ascends via the waymarked Pennine Way, up to Knock Fell, over Great and Little Dun Fells and finally finishing at the impressive dry-stone shelter that marks the summit of Cross Fell. Sitting on a bedrock of Sandstone, Appleby is free draining so is playable all year round, which is a rare thing in Cumbria! Waitby School is an extended and renovated 17thC schoolhouse standing proud on a breathtaking fell in the Eden Valley.

By 18th century local influence of earls of Thanet was challenged by acquisition of land and property in Appleby by Lowther family, later earls of Lonsdale. During the 9th century, Viking settlers drawn to the rich grazing lands around the river founded the first settlements of Temple Sowerby, Bolton, Appleby, Great Ormside and Sandford.Through Appleby Global Services, we also offer a range of administration, reporting and fiduciary services focused on corporate structures.
