Scythe Big Shuriken 3 CPU-Kühler for AMD and Intel CPU´s

In spite of its reduced thickness, an average life-span of 100 000 hours is achieved thanks to the self-contained fluid dynamic bearing (FDB). Scythe has always done well to attract attention to their packaging, and with the Big Shuriken 3, this has not changed. I had tried the Noctua NH-L9i-17xx since their site shows "mild OC" capability with an i7-12700K, which is generous to say the least. I've tried daily driving my 5900X at "65W TDP" values (88 PPT, 60 TDC, 90 EDC) just to see how it does and I get about 85% of the multicore performance with no loss in single core performance. Below, to the left, we see the four black spacers, one side of which has a rubber washer on it for isolation, the Intel nuts for the brackets, and the LGA2011/2066 standoffs.

Its heatpipes are gently sloped backwards so that the radiator is not centred directly above the base-plate, but slightly offset. This effectively removes the waste heat from the processor so that it can develop its full performance. There were no clearance issues to report with this motherboard as the heatsink design kept the fins and heat pipes away from VRMs and clear of the DIMM slots.All testing was performed on an open test bench, which minimizes ambient temperature and gives a “worst case” scenario for sound level. For the weight of this aluminum and copper-based assembly of parts, we have to go to the bottom of the chart, but the 475-gram weight is shown. The included 15 mm slim fan was inaudible at idle, and while it did generate over 40 dBA under load at ~1800 RPM it managed to keep a Core i7-7700K cooler than some tower designs are capable of.

After the protective plastic layer is removed from the base of the cooler, and TIM is applied to the CPU heat spreader, you can attempt to mount the cooler to the brackets. The last image of the sides of the Big Shuriken 3 is a mirror to what we looked at two images ago, but gives is a chance to look under the fins for some more details. With the next two pictures, we can see the offset design and notched areas of the fin stack to allow for the best possible compatibility among motherboards and RAM. This was a tight fit for my Phanteks Evolv Shift XT case, and I mean just BARELY fits while letting the metal mesh panels slide in.So, the Big Shuriken 3 performed well in the low to mid heat range, but can’t keep up with the larger heatsinks during high heat loads. While we have not reviewed any of the past version of this cooler, we are no stranger to C-Style coolers, no matter the size and design.
