About this deal

They work best on absorbent papers such as watercolour ones but being alcohol based, they can cause colour bleed if used on lightweight papers. The Full Blender Stick is a colourless oil and wax based medium that is used to enhance drawings and intensify colours by creating a gloss effect whilst protecting the colours from UV light and water. The Derwent blender pencil is the ideal tool for when you want to create subtle blends of colours in your artwork.

Use the Blender to blend colours together, and the Burnisher to create a rich, polished finish over layers of pigment. As soon as I laid the pen over the pencil colour ( WH Smith brand) the colour strengthened and seemed to become thicker/heavier in appearance - the 'white specks' noticeable in the first image became almost invisible and had I used this type of 'solvent' all over the image, it would create the same effect over the rest of the artwork, hiding most of the white flecks seen in the paper grain that the pencils could not reach.Over saturation can create 'clumping' and scratch away top layers of colour, leaving behind dust that need to be brushed from the paper. Brush and pencil powder blender - The powder blender is a non-toxic, archival dry lubricant which is applied beneath any pigment and allows artists to blend colours without the use of solvents.

The LYRA Rembrandt Splender is a colourless oil-based pencil that enables artists to gently smooth and soften colour lines and edges, and seamlessly blend and merge colour joins. All your colours should be applied before you blend, as further layers will become stubborn as the tooth becomes saturated. The blender pencil is perfect for smudging, blending or softening the edges, allowing you to create subtle details and smooth out the texture of your artwork. Designed for use with pencils, these Blender pens enable the artist to blend away pencil lines, creating smooth and even colour. With over 150 years of know-how packed into every pencil and art tool, our creative and scientific minds never cease experimenting. If you want to create a subtle blend of colours then the Derwent Blender pencil is exactly what you need. If you apply your colours smoothly before applying the blender, it softens the edges just as well as it does for the wax-based pencils. When using with graphite pencils, I found they simply blended all the different grades into one dark, shade - again, probably not really suited to use with graphite pencils in my opinion. Although the burnisher can help to blend a little, it does not soften hard edges as well as a blender. The Prismacolor blender may indent the paper slightly, depending how much pressure you apply and it may feel 'scratchy' when using other brands of pencil.

A watercolour paper is absorbant and the best type of paper to use with an alcohol-based blender pen.The pencil blender creates a slight sheen when viewed at a certain angle but it is far more muted than the Derwent burnisher application. You will find the donation buttons below and can follow us on ko-fi to stay informed of the latest news. The results may vary depending on the pencil brand you use as well as the type of paper and it may be worthwhile trying out a few samples before using it over a drawing that will be offered for sale. Having trialled out an Amur Leopard eye on the UArt Dark paper recently I thought I would see how the Blender Pen would help to improve this drawing and I decided to use it over 4 different areas - those marked with a star on the 'after' image (as well as the eye) The brilliant thing about this pen is that it works brilliantly as a 'base smoother' the layers of loose pencil that are applied can then be thickened up with the blender pen, once it has fully dried, further layers can be applied over the top which appear much finer and offer more effect than before. Before you use your pencil blender, you may need to wipe the nib across a spare sheet of paper to remove any excess colour off from the last area you blended or you may end up muddying your colours.
