About this deal

Can refer to either home-made garden compost or seed/potting compost: • Garden compost is a soil improver made from decomposed plant waste, usually in a compost bin or heap. The heating will probably be off now, so the good days are here for house plants, but you could start misting and place a tray of water and pebbles nearby. These citrus oils also don’t harm the useful microorganisms responsible for the breakdown of your food waste.

Remember that balance is the key; always include things to retain the pH balance of your compost pile to keep your worms safe. Opinion on this is divided because citrus isn’t the most straightforward of fruits to compost, but the right answer is that yes, you can definitely compost citrus. Take care that your citrus peels are cut up into small pieces; it may be a good idea to dry them out first for better decomposition. As with oranges and lemons, it’s safe to compost grapefruit if you follow the necessary precautions. Most bacteria found in mold will prefer a colder environment; good compost piles get much warmer than this.

Citrus are not hardy in Britain, they are best grown in pots outdoors in summer then brought back inside for winter. This is an old myth dating back at least to when I started seriously composting 40 some odd years ago. Among these is the fact that citrus is rich in nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, making it a solid source of nutrients for your compost. Place Leveington® Citrus Compost in the bottom of the pot and put the root ball on the top of this layer. Remember that the ratio of browns to greens is still important even if you are not paying attention to your pile too often.

In the colder months, it may be a good idea to dry out your citrus peels first to speed up the decomposition process, which makes it easier to compost. Peat-free and pH balanced, this compost has been fortified with iron for greener leaves leading to healthy plants and higher yields.

In winter, allow the surface to partially dry out before watering, then water thoroughly with rainwater, allowing excess moisture to drain away. You’ll hear people say that you should avoid putting citrus into your worm farm at all costs because worms don’t like the acid levels of compost. This is simply because the oils will evaporate long before you actually get around to using compost in your garden soil. Place a layer of potting mix in the bottom of the new pot, and gently tap the old plant from its pot. Make sure to move the parts of the compost that are in the middle (the hottest part) around so that the colder parts can move to the middle and also heat up. Now its easier than ever to care for your plants with Miracle-Gro, no matter how big or small your need, or how small your space.

While the general idea behind composting is “anything that once lived” can go into a compost pile, there are still some questions floating around. Just remember that it’s best to cut up your citrus peels first before you use them, and you should be good to go! The slimline, resealable pouch is designed to stand upright so it is easy to find on shelves or any cupboard or where space is tight. Firstly, it’s not that citrus peels don’t decompose, it’s that they take a longer time than average to break down.
