I also don’t use a filter because I figured the gravel and screen would take care of anything too large to clog the water pump. We started off with a sort of mushroom and played around with it until I found the gentle burble effect I was after. A little cork helps keep that in place, and away from the more absorbent organic substrate you're probably using.
