There should be a bind button on the receiver, I would turn the vehicle on and then press the bind key for a few seconds until bind light is blinking. I feel both points of view hold merit in regards to going with a ‘cheap’ brand or a more ‘premium’ brand like Spektrum.
From what I’ve read the only big issue is with the power button, just wondered if this is still the case? really dropped the weight of the radio significantly - great for the long trail runs - and the lipo will last most of a G6 weekend. For racing, the GT5 is probably the better way to go, but, for bashing, unless you get a lemon, the GT3B is good enough.

If its like the Futaba gear and there is a bind button on the unit, more than likely you need to hold the bind key down and then turn the transmitter on. The Optima's steering doesn't require much throw either way, and I find that my servo is pushing/pulling about a quarter-inch farther than it needs to.
