About this deal

Bought this calculator for my son for Christmas as recommended by his school for his A level maths studies. As a gadgeteer, I open techy stuff all the time and I can tell you that I’ve never had a package that was more difficult to open. Now we just need to cross of fingers for them to find a solution and to provide an update of the firmware. The fx-CG50AU’s screen printing function allows you to investigate aspects of functions with clarity – for example, investigate the slope of a tangent as it moves in real time, along a function.

This should not be confused with the special E-CON4 mode, which allows for collection of data for use in classroom science and tech lessons. But yes, still much better than another company, which actively prohibits using their products differently than designed. This product is great - a well known solid advanced calculator of the old Cassio build-quality before the company's cynical downgrading of the useability and build-quality of other models that are commonly used in the UK (eg EEX to CW for the Classwiz A-level). Available as downloadable PDFs and videos – there is a handy collection of ‘How To’ resources and model specific content. They seem to last a while, but I was surprised to see that on a calculator that has such processing power.

I do wish they’d made another color an option because the Casio fx-CG50 PRIZM really picked up the pencil lead in my kid’s backpack. He found the Casio fx-CG50 PRIZM calculator fairly intuitive, but he says he still has to fiddle with it to find what he wants just because he isn’t as familiar with it as his old calculators. The large, high-resolution colour display with natural illustration shows fractions, square roots and other numerical expressions in the same way as they appear in maths textbooks. In fact, he usually carries two graphing calculators to school in case one runs out of battery or a friend forgot theirs, so I enlisted his help for this review. Now I run an HP50g emulator on my computer so I don’t have to pull my HP50g out of the desk drawer where it lives.

I'm not sure what the issue is, but if you're happy with how your calculator is set up I'd advise against updating for now. Want to ask a question, offer a suggestion, share your own programs and projects, upload a file to the file archives, get help with calculator and computer programming, or simply chat with like-minded coders and tech and calculator enthusiasts via the site-wide AJAX SAX widget? Easier to work round than a class pad and absolutely excellent even for higher tier gcse 9 to 1 though probably not recommended for the exam room but great for classroom work.
