About this deal

Their restlessness is nothing but a benefit for us as this record is a warm welcome back and quite the treat for those of us that have been waiting for years for that neon and chrome synthwave that they are so adept at creating. Here, you’ve got John Carpenter, Tim Cappello, Tyler Bates and Carpenter Brut, the appearance of all of whom feel like a roundabout way of Gunship legitimising what they’re doing without the need to stake much of a claim themselves.

And while that’s more on those loud, isolated voices who’ll spend their time screaming at the defence of an act they have no more personal stake in than said act themselves, you have to believe that Gunship are aware of that. I think Technoir 2 was ruined by the chorus from the second singer and many of the other tunes are just too much bubble gum for me. It makes a strong start with ‘Monster In Paradise’, a cinematic sprawl of pounding 80s pop beats and melodies. The songs are great and varied but all with that GUNSHIP vibe, which blends so well with this album. If it isn’t, soundboard are either getting desperate for reviewers or they aren’t vetting submissions.

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. It’s followed by ‘Empress of the Damned’, a glitching, pulsing anthem fuelled by the high, airy voice of Canadian electropop star Lights . There’s also contributions from legendary drummer Dave Lombardo and Tyler Bates, in a star-studded opener to the album that’s anthemic and easy dancefloor fodder. Opener pazzesca (di cui è stato realizzato un bellissimo video a tema cyberpunk), seguita da un saggio dosaggio di brani ora sognanti e atmosferici, ora incalzanti, sempre nostalgici di un'estetica di un tempo che fu (l'introduzione di John Carpenter in Tech Noir 2 è programmatica).Weaponized Love” feels like their love letter to Nine Inch Nails with its lusty lyrics and beats and “Holographic Heart” – which features Britta Phillips – is pure Madonna worship in the best way. On top of that, pretty much from Ghost onwards, Gunship begin to cycle through their bag in tricks in even more obvious fashions, and it becomes so easy to lose interest when it’s padded to that extent.

Unfortunately, once you’re past the halfway mark, songs start to bleed into each other and it’s just too much. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since. Between Wargasm’s Milkie Way, Busted’s Charlie Simpson and Bush’s Gavin Rossdale, there’s barely an inkling of personality among them. GUNSHIP have always seemed like an entity that could easily float into any space within the electronic music scene that they wanted to and bless their hearts they just don’t care to land in one spot.

I’ve always considered GUNSHIP to be at the top of their class and one of the premier acts of their genre and Unicorn does nothing but prove this further. Named after the international icon of fantasy and imagination, UNICORN is emblazoned with the tagline “Imagination Is A Weapon”. To be kind, it’s a display of how limited and inflexible Gunship’s ‘80s palette truly is; to be not-so-kind, it’s a chore to get through that burns through its best ideas in the first half (charitably), and sees fit to crater any and all creative impulses for the remainder of this hour-long brick of synth buzz. The saxophone work by Tim Capello is stunning with collaboration also with the legendary John Carpenter. Tastes Like Venom’ is another solid floorfiller, but it feels like it’s lacking some oomph, or perhaps just the star-studded remainder of Unicorn ’s other opening songs overshadow it.

They’re simply just parts of an objectively impressive array of guests, plugged into place with barely a thought given to what uniqueness they could possibly bring. It’s not even worth singling out individual tracks for the most part, either; there’s barely anything to single out! Regardless as a somewhat self-professed metalhead, synthwave provided some of the same release that I get from riffs and blast beats but it does so through a completely different sonic milieu.Due to inventory and accounting purposes, we do not exchange items received for different items than originally purchased. The review consistently leans towards negative commentary, and the language used suggests a level of personal frustration or disappointment with the album. He’s got a voice that’s fit for Britrock—fine for a tenure as co-vocalist in Fightstar—but against the tide of incessant cinematics in which maximalism is the default setting, he doesn’t stand a chance. I mean, there isn't much else to say - if you liked some of the songs on their first two albums, then you'll definitely like some of the tracks on this one. Da ich bisher jedes Album auf irgendeinem Medium zuhause hab (neben den Dauerplaylist in den Streamingdiensten), war hier diesmal die Vinylvariante dran.
