About this deal

Naturally all of the residual British military are cads, bounders and buffoons, though the convicts are often portrayed as decent of desperate men, still struggling to get an even break. Amid red-coated soldiery, yellow-jacketed convicts and a tanned peasantry governed by a wealthy elite, the Fir becks equip themselves with arms and supplies, and set off across the sweltering plains; the hardships and hazards they face confirm Luke's resolve to become the leader of his family of pioneers. Executive producer and former BBC documentary man Tony Essex died 10 days after the series was finished. When the Disney Channel contracted the UK ITV broadcaster HTV Wales to bring to the screen this major drama series, it realised a legacy left by Robert Louis Stevenson when he wrote his classic thriller more than a hundred years ago. The picture is a bit grainy but I remember it being like that when it was first broadcast on telly many moons ago. Oliver Tobias Freitag, known professionally as Oliver Tobias, is a Swiss-born UK-based film, stage, and television actor and director. The way the natives are treated almost seems to be an over zealous approach to a normal stereotypical one of either ignoring them of making them out to be the baddies, but although it shows some ill-treatment and injustice, they appear to sit in groups waiting for white man to bring grog or work until they fight or are attacked.Set in Australia in 1829, follow the tale of a family led by a retired naval lieutenant recently widowed who take his two sons Samuel and Luke and his daughter Jassy to New South Wales.

It was co-produced with Trident Television, the then owners of Yorkshire and Tyne Tees Television, and aired in 1976 on Nine Network in Australia and ITV in the United Kingdom. Tobias, with his rugged good looks was already on his way to making a career of period-piece dramas having previously starred in Arthur of the Britons, he would follow this series with a guest appearance in Dick Turpin and a starring role in Smuggler. He does an awful lot of yelling into the wide blue yonder, but he does it in a terribly posh accent. As they face the struggles of fitting into this strange new world, the family equip themselves with arms and supplies, and set off across the sweltering plains only to strengthen Luke's resolve to become the leader of the land. Filmed entirely on location, it is a tale of pioneering and achievement against bitter odds, in which a family struggles to carve out an existence in a land more dangerous and more brutal than the West at its wildest.

Show more Show less Starring Oliver Tobias, James Condon, Helen Morse and Elizabeth Crosby, and produced by Tony Essex, 'Luke's Kingdom' is an epic adventure series set in Australia during the early nineteenth century. It's all tightly directed, including some episodes directed by none other than Peter Weir (Picnic at Hanging Rock) and fan favourite Peter Hammond (The Avengers). Their journey was not meant to be a speculative one, as the father, former naval lieutenant Jason Firbeck (James Condon), set out to claim land bequeathed to them by an old friend. Luke's father Jason (James Condon) is representative of a more naïve generation who somehow believe that all the righteousness of the empire will follow them into the wild, and he is constantly disappointed that the old guard often turn out to be the most corrupt, Fortunately for him, and the family, Luke is under no such delusion. Light reading creases, some shelf and edge wear, small sticker tear to front cover, light foxing to inside covers and endpapers.
