NuBone is a harder, denser material than plastic and will (in theory) transmit more of the strings’ vibration to the body of the uke. I’ve never been much of an equipment hound for whatever instrument I’ve played, but I have trouble finding any significant differences between these models – they both have a decent warmth of sound and hold in tune fairly well. The absence of binding accentuates the natural beauty of the wood, creating a visually elegant instrument.

Some folks with larger hands or fat fingers may find the short fingerboard and close frets of a soprano a little tricky to navigate. It’s great for people who want to learn the ukulele and try it out before dropping big bucks on an instrument they might not like or commit to. The Makala Dolphin is a soprano sized ukulele, which is the smallest of the three primary ukulele sizes.

My final verdict is that if you like the Dolphin’s unique design and interesting color options, it’s a reasonably good uke for the money. If you’re the kind of person that doesn’t bash the strings quite so hard though you’re going to get the most out of this uke. The only difference between the two ukes is that the Dolphin has a dolphin-shaped bridge while the Shark has a shark-shaped bridge.
