About this deal

The Sherlock manga, as is obvious from a glance at the cover, is based on Sherlock, the hit BBC series created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. He’s been turned into dogs – both in the Sherlock Hound 1980s anime, involving a young Hayao Miyazaki (amusingly mashed up here), and in the manga Sherlock Bones, which reincarnates the detective as a crime-solving pooch.

He also tries to be kind to Molly, in his own way, but it’s a rather cruel way that infuriates John. In fact, there’s no such thing as “baritsu” in Japan – the word was a misspelling of “bartitsu”, a short-lived British attempt to combine judo and jujitsu. Starring worldwide superstars Benedict Cumberbatch (upcoming Doctor Strange) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit). The size of the art is slightly larger in the English version, as it doesn’t have to make room for the translations and occasional footnotes.

Manga adaptation of the second Sherlock BBC episode starring worldwide superstars Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit). In fairness to Jay, these elements are the hardest to capture in still images, especially when you’re drawing in an art form as stylized as manga. In his mind, it's a curse – he's a samurai who can't use a steel blade, a man who can't even get a close sha. Adapting the first series of the smash-hit Hartswood Films television show starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as John, this fantastic slipcase edition brings together A Study in Pink , The Blind Banker and The Great Game in manga format. That’s illustrated by this video of his arrival in Narita airport in 2013, as well as this one from 2012.

However, Sherlock arguably succeeded less because of its setting than because of its hugely popular double act of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Watson. The new series will be available in print and digital versions, and will include extended page counts, and new covers and art. But on the other hand, perhaps the fact that he has become more than a character, that he’s an icon, might help ease his mind.

Judging by the first 40-page instalment of “A Study in Pink,” it’s Martin Freeman’s Watson who gets the better deal so far. Titan is offering extended page counts, as well as new art and covers by artists including Alice X Zhang, in its manga series, the first issue of which opens with Holmes and Watson’s first meeting and ends with the pair moving in together. However, given that Sherlock fans can easily purchase the TV episode itself, the manga’s main interest is in how it translates the story from one medium to another. However, that was a rather dialogue-heavy section of the television episode, so this part of the graphic novel is somewhat dominated by shots of talking heads.
