About this deal

Tezuka tries to make his poorly constructed story have an emotional atmosphere by shoe-horning in tragic events like war, discrimination, fascism, and so on, even plopping in historical events to set the time, but it’s ineffective here. When Toge tries to investigate the murder, he gets marked by the Nazis and winds up in a desperate race to locate a set of documents that have the power to destroy Adolf Hitler. The plot is packed with espionage, car and train chases, shootouts, and fistfights against Nazis and Japanese special police as Toge’s journey leads to a set of documents that can destroy Adolf Hitler. Always on the lookout for a good story idea, Tezuka apparently came up with the concept for Message to Adolf (1983-85) after reading that an American scholar had theorized that Hitler’s ancestry included mixed Jewish blood. Those scenes are visually-staggering, vividly-haunting (though it doesn't contain the alienating feel of Tsuge's works) and comparable to the austere beauty of the Himalayas in Buddha (though they do have a different feel).

Zatímco popis průběhu války je takřka dokumentární, tak příběh hlavních hrdinů je podán velmi emocionálně. It sounded like an interesting comic, especially with Tezuka behind it, but disappointingly, it wasn’t – in fact, I ended up hating it. Final Verdict: Message to Adolf is a tremendous work that was an early pioneer in validating comics as a medium for all subject matters.

Vertical has done it well again, re-releasing this epic from Tezuka in two hardcover volumes, instead of 8 trade paperbacks.

It is also interesting to note that since much of the story takes place in Kobe – were Tezuka lived as a boy – Message to Adolf (1983-85) captures much of the authentic World War II-era atmosphere of Kobe. It's a story that effectively combines the slice-of-life, fantasy, and underdog genres in a digestible package.

As a late career adult work, Message to Adolf (1983-85) certainly relies less on Tezuka’s Star System cast than his other earlier works.Paralelamente, se desarrolla una historia de amistad infantil cuya caída en la fatalidad se presume inevitable. The series has been published in Brazil by Conrad Editora, in France by Tonkam, in Germany by Carlsen Verlag, in Italy by Hazard, in Spain by Planeta DeAgostini, in Netherlands by Xtra, and in Poland by Waneko. I find it interesting Tezuka implies Hitler was a man who abstained from all forms of stimulants, as shown in a brief dinner scene.
