About this deal

Shoni Productions have optioned Catherine Hewitt’s life of the courtesan, the Countess Valtesse de la Bigne, The Mistress of Paris. We take pride in offering a wide selection of used books, from classics to hidden gems, ensuring there is something for every literary palate. With the wealth she acquired, she lived a luxurious lifestyle, and purchased fabulous mansions, carriages and an art collection which made her the envy of connoisseurs across Europe.

As we gaze upon this old yet impeccably preserved artwork, we are reminded of how music transcends time and connects generations across centuries. Hewitt has created an engaging and richly narrated biography exploring not only this figure’s life but also the inner workings of Paris at the time Valtesse’s star began to rise. BookBrowse seeks out and recommends the best in contemporary fiction and nonfiction—books that not only engage and entertain but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. This appears to be part of a series, however, in that the two main characters reference being spies for George Washington and get invited back to Mount Vernon.

Their contributions often went unnoticed or underappreciated but were essential for society to function smoothly. Catherine Hewitt’s biography tells, for the first time ever in English, the forgotten story of a remarkable woman who, though her roots were lowly, never stopped aiming high. She falls in love with the wrong man and even when she tells him she feels the same but that they cannot be together for he is intended for her cousin, he pursues her.

A gorgeous, smart, ambitious, hard-working, steely autodidact and businesswoman whose product was herself, Valtesse would be totally at home in our self-branding society. Moving on we enjoyed a ‘Pea Velouté’, followed by ‘Duck Parmentier with Braised Baby Gem Lettuce’ – this was superb; the rich, duck confit filling was topped by the creamiest purée of potato. There are unforgettable and horrifying scenes here in this spare and sombre memoir of this experience of the hanging of a child, of his first farewell with his father who leaves him an inheritance of a knife and a spoon, and of his last goodbye at Buchenwald his father's corpse is already cold let alone the long months of survival under unconscionable conditions.Henrietta Lightfoot is a innocent young girl who just wants to be accepted by her aunt and uncle and to be best friends with her cousin. I didn’t mind at first, like every book worm, I have a homebody side and I think there was a certain novelty to the whole thing in the beginning. I want you in what you never dared to tell anyone, in your clumsiness, your shame, your doubts, your hopes. Ultimately, in 1992, his terms got him into mortal trouble when he ran up against something—the Alaskan wild—that didn't give a hoot about Supertramp's worldview; his decomposed corpse was found 16 weeks after he entered the bush. Of course, there should always be space for dessert, and how could I resist their homemade ‘Nougat Ice cream’, it was incredibly good, flavoured with dried fruit, a touch of ginger and a fresh red fruit sauce.

Catherine Hewitt's biography tells, for the first time ever in English, the forgotten story of a remarkable woman who, though her roots were lowly, never stopped aiming high. I found this phenomenon, which could be deemed as a career ladder or rite of passage for unprivileged women, absolutely fascinating and am thirsty for more. As we admire this remarkable piece from Tradeswomen of Paris published in 1823, it serves as a reminder of the countless women who played vital roles within their communities through their various professions. The author's youthfulness helps to assure the inevitable comparison with the Anne Frank diary although over and above the sphere of suffering shared, and in this case extended to the death march itself, there is no spiritual or emotional legacy here to offset any reader reluctance. An entertaining read, this book will likely appeal to history buffs as well as those who enjoy a well-written biography.

In 2012, she completed her PhD on The Formation of the Family in 19th-Century French Literature and Art, with joint supervision from Royal Holloway and the Courtauld Institute. Her lovers included painters and politicians, and she caused plenty of scandal that will have you curled up with this book for hours. I hate it when authors try to include famous figures and give them a personality that suits the book's style more than authenticity, and I honestly wish they would've just left well enough alone. Mally Becker's Revolutionary War-era historical mysteries continue to delight, with both their originality and their solid sense of time and place. Not only did I enjoy the sights and the spectacular spring sunshine (we really lucked out on the weather!
