About this deal

This is how I justify it: If the mobo come with a Gigabit LAN, I would want to add a NIC, if I'm going to add a NIC it may as well be 10GB. The amount of money spent on storage increases with capacity, redundancy, and the performance of the storage. An excellent motherboard that fully supports Intel 10th and 11th generation processors is the MSI MPG B560I Gaming Edge Wi-Fi. That leaves me with 2 PCIE slots, 1 for an H310 HBA card which will give me an additional 8x sata when needed and 1 for 10GB NIC if needed in the future. You'll have to turn off Turbo too (as mentioned in the powertop readme), and probably also have to limit PL1/PL2 power states - keeping PL1 within 32 seconds.

The above two CPUs seem to me to be the only viable options, unless you go for very old (and insecure) hardware. Because I prefer the TrueNAS appliance OS (SCALE or CORE), it is important to understand that all of the boot drives’ capacity is dedicated to the appliance and that none of the capacity will be accessible for the purpose of user storage.Apart from the physical slots, you should also check the maximum memory capacity of your motherboard which is generally given as up to 64 GB or up to 128 GB. Alternatively, I would consider using Velcro or double-sided tape to adhere the SATA SSDs into any gaps inside the case. slot, but overall, especially considering 2 MiniSAS HD ports, this board might be even better than the flagship model.

the CPU was never the limiting factor, RAM eventually became the issue and prompted an upgrade to user server gear so I could run much more RAM, and PCIe devices. Thankfully, you still get a decent number of ports on the back with this budget motherboard which includes 4 x USB 3. Secondly, if you are looking for an enterprise-grade SAS controller, then they can cost quite expensive.Nearly every year, the EconoNAS lacks two killer features that an off-the-shelf NAS always has: diminutive footprints and hot swap hard drive bays. What would be really nice would be a more cost effective Thunderbolt to PCIE adapter so you could use a bunch of SAS cards/expanders.

For the NICs, you just replied to my question about the IBM NICs, so here’s hoping I manage to get them working. Additionally, you should ensure the power supply requirements for your motherboard and the rest of your build. If you’re after performance, picking out the correct motherboard is just as important as the processor, RAM, and storage.Gigabyte’s X570 UD motherboard for NAS is the best performing option given here especially if you are looking for an AMD-based motherboard.

I agree however that the ASM1166 is a good option - if you get it work (I have the same board - just havent gone that path down yet). Gigabyte also offers a few motherboard models that you can consider if you are looking for motherboards that are based on the Intel platform instead of the AMD platform for those who are interested in building a NAS. This helps me be quite a bit more confident in this build, despite the fact that I did not build this NAS. Even though this is a highly affordable motherboard, you still get the fairly common and decently versatile A320 chipset with it. With hundreds of different motherboards in the market, picking the right model can be an uphill task.In my first post I said I would use my NR400, and this may very well happen if I decide not to spend the money. With support for AMD Ryzen processors, you’ll be able to enjoy the performance benefits of the latest generation of AMD CPUs.
