About this deal

Usually, I don’t use the full power of the lens because 1:1 magnification is often overkill for my subjects.

When I first received this lens for testing I thought I would simply test it for a few weeks and send it back without a thought, like I do with most of the products I review, but the Olympus 60mm Macro was different.I hope you find these additional images of interest, and enjoy reviewing the corresponding EXIF data.

If you use the same (or a similar) lens, at the same f‑number, on a full‑frame (FF) camera and a MFT camera, diffraction gives twice the blur on the MFT. or f/8 with the camera on a sturdy tripod using the electronic shutter and a timed or remote release. Each evaluation is based on actual in-the-field use and may therefore differ from, for example, lab tests available on the Internet. Some props to try out are old leaves off the ground, nearby flowers, or even something artificial like a color card or your friend’s shirt!I prefer to use the excellent autofocus whenever possible, but the focus ring is easy to use and has a guiding measurement on the top of the lens that shows the focus distance. When I wasn’t shooting macro images, I often shot with the lens wide open because I knew this lens could provide me with the sharpness I need while producing very pleasing bokeh. If you get sharp photos under those conditions, as you definitely should, the problem is your technique under less favorable conditions.

When I wrote this post, I had only had the lens for a few days but I was already impressed by Olympus’ first attempt at a macro Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens.

Macro is surprisingly small and lightweight for a telemacro lens featuring a maximum aperture of f/2. This lens is splash- and dustproof, so you can take it outside during bad weather and get the shots you need.

Micro four Thirds camera owners interested in macro photography should add this lens to their wish list. My copy suffers from some left edge field curvature at longer focus distances (likely a decentered element). The closest equivalent available for Micro Four Thirds system cameras is Panasonic's Leica branded 45mm f/2. Internal focusing mechanism maintains the overall lens length while focusing for easier use when photographing close-up subjects. It should not be any smaller, the broad focus ring is an asset and not a obstacle (or a con feature, as you claimed). macro lens with me throughout the rest of my weekend and I shot anything that I thought would look good through the 60mm lens perspective!
