About this deal

That’s the third time Philip dominates an episode away from home … first in the Spanish Civil war in flashback (To Die For Spain, August 1938), then a whole episode set in Guernsey before the German invasion (Four Strategic Reasons). The series follows the lives of the various members of a single family, the Ashtons, of approximately lower-middle-class status (although their class position is actually more complex and piebald than this label might suggest), mostly based in their Liverpool home but with narrative excursions to other locations as various family members were drafted into the armed forces, mobilised or evacuated. If you cannot play them in the USA you will need to contact the company from whom you purchased for and exchange or refund.

The real problem, though, is not so much with this series but with the considerably superior offerings that came later. Time has not diminished the artistry of all the actors and except for a few scenes where the quality is not perfect by today's standards, the overall quality of the production is top notch. I’ve seen Colin Douglas in ‘Doctor Who’ stories like ‘The Enemy of the World’ and ‘Horror of Fang Rock’.Two of the Stout sisters, Elizabeth and Anne, extensively toured the battlefields on their free days away from the charitable work they were engaged in on the continent. Although sometimes repetitive in parts, this book is a particularly poignant and timely read for Remembrance Day.

You’d think they’d be switchable, because so many Dutch people speak English at a high level that it must be irritating to contrast them. Back in 1970 to 1972 I didn’t have a television, and if I ever saw an episode of A Family At War it has long gone from my memory. There's dark, brooding Colin Campbell to begin with, and the beautiful Barbara Flynn, plus remarkable acting from Margery Mason as the neurotic mother of a soldier who goes missing during the retreat to Dunkirk - and Patrick Troughton as her long-suffering spouse. June 2017 – A Family At War (52 episodes) has started being repeated on the ‘Talking Pictures’ channel Freeview TV http://talkingpicturestv.Most importantly, the audience at the time remembered the war, and even those born after it, like me, had heard SO much about it.

Growing up in the 60s, like most of my generation I had been reared on Britain’s obsession with World War II.John Finch states that he only wrote the original treatment as a ruse to be invited to the annual Granada conference where new drama ideas were discussed.

She is the author of David Lean (2014) and Female Stars of British Cinema (2017) and a co-investigator on the AHRC-funded project ‘Transformation and Tradition in 1960s British Cinema’. Colin Douglas was magnificent in this series as was the rest of the cast which starred in this story of the Ashton family as they made their way through those difficult times of World War Two. That’s a tribute to the actress, but we realized that her character was carrying over for us from the (later) brilliant series written by Andrew Davies, A Very Peculiar Practice, in which she plays the right-on feminist Dr Magda, who sees everything in a sexual light! Sefton turns up for a surprise visit and is shocked to find they’re off for an unmarried weekend away. I wondered how my great grandmother would have reacted to the ‘new notion of food economy’ as she tried to divide up meagre rations among a growing and hungry family.Granada was noted for avoiding lavish costume drama, but liked the concept of a drama based around less expensive studio-based domestic interiors with a minimum of location shooting.
