What Mazzucchelli accomplishes, though, with remarkable clarity and a jazzy pop-culture eye, and which the written word has a tougher time with, is portraying silence, moments between something said and something to come--even thought itself. Nothing super sexy or anything (you pervs), but details that could have easily been left out of the conversation. With "Asterios Polyp," Mazzucchelli has put paid to that charge: It's funny, it's warm and it's beautiful. Asterios and Hana are one of the most fascinating and real couples I've ever encountered in fiction. I think this is an incredibly relevant and important look at relationships in modern times - where solipsism rules over sacrifice.
