One bugbear I have with the film is the visual reveal of the Fiend – I do not think the effects do the malignant entity justice (same bone of contention I have with the otherwise great 1957 film Night of the Demon). The film, as it should be, is more showing than telling and in the process certain plot points are harder to grasp. The hardback is presented brilliantly and the illustrations in the book are beautiful - worth adding a star on for them. Much like Blood on Satan’s Claw the film has become synonymous with the Folk Horror movement and has achieved a similar status as a classic of the genre.

I wouldn't say I was disappointed but I think giving it five stars would be because I like the film more than the book.

You can trace the arc of discovery, initial infestation, spread of infestation, near total destruction, arrival of exterminator/exorcist, and final resolution.

Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. This book is a great introduction to the movie and it brings out several aspects of it that I had missed watching it on my own.Since this is an example of what has been classified as “folk horror” the landscape does indeed play a key role. The book is heavy on facts and Grafius provides some tremendous background information about the time in which the film is set.

It went on to screen frequently in the American drive-in theater circuit throughout the remainder of 1971. The narrative justification does not make sense, nor does the true motivation for why the person most capable of stopping it choses not to. Along with The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General , it found new ways to terrify audiences using elements of superstition and folklore. So, I guess it’s apt that at our wedding and at our upcoming vow renewal we’re including elements of the natural world. Actress Roberta Tovey has an uncredited role as the coven member who lures Padbury's character to her death.Additionally, several other changes were mandated by Tigon, including a redraft of the ending, which originally had the Judge enlisting a militia to murder the entire village to eradicate the cult. Blood on Satan’s Claw’ is widely regarded as part of the ‘unholy trinity’ of cult classics which gave birth to the film genre that would become known as folk horror. The Blood on Satan's Claw (or Blood on Satan's Claw) [a] is a 1971 British supernatural period folk horror film directed by Piers Haggard and starring Patrick Wymark, Linda Hayden, and Barry Andrews. I haven't seen the film this book is based on, but the book itself is a great tale of devil worship and general folk horror madness from the 17th century. The Blood on Satan's Claw premiered in New York City in April 1971, and was subsequently released in London on 16 July 1971.
