Authored by Verna Aardema, Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain is a delightful rhyming story full of bright and vivid illustrations by Beatriz Vidal. I believe this is due to the repetition and lyricism of this book making it a joy to read aloud, with the vibrant double-page illustrations by Beatriz Vidal adding to the appeal of this book as something to be shared. January 2023 update: I happened upon a copy of this book around the house and read it again before donating it. I first came across this book at a book fair in Kuala Lumpur in 1997 and I think my little son and I must have read it every day for a couple of years.

Originally collected by British anthropologist Sir Claud Hollis, and included in his 1909 book The Nandi: Their Language and Folk-Lore, the tale has been modernized by Verna Aardema, whose many excellent adaptations of African folklore include the Caldecott Medal-winner, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears. I remember seeing this book on Reading Rainbow performed by the one man who could make it authentic as it is from darkest Africa: Mr James Earl Jones, the Afro-American actor with THAT VOICE. The book is about a drought in Africa, Kapiti Plain and the animals end up migrating so Ki-Pat(main character) finds a way to bring the rain, and animals, back to Kapiti Plain. It could also be integrated with social studies or science when learning about different ecosystems or weather.A big favorite of theirs and mine was Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain by Verna Aardema and illustrated by Beatriz Vidal. The stressed syllables there are browse and cows, so the introduction is set apart from the story with this very subtle variation in the meter as well as being set apart from the structure of the main story. Although Scholastic indicates “Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain” would be of interest to 3rd-5th graders, my kindergartener enjoyed listening to it.

Early Reading teaching is embedded throughout and suggestions for Continuous Provision are also made. The illustrations are done by an artist who has created designs for UNICEF cards; the art was familiar and I think that’s why. In this lovely rhyming picture book, based upon the folk traditions of the Nandi people of Kenya, a herdsman named Ki-pat finds a way to end the drought, and bring some much-needed rain to Kapiti Plain.

This would also be an effective scaffolding exercise as the language used in Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain is quite complex, with lots of tricky words. This teaching sequence focuses primarily on the key skills of reading aloud with expression and fluency, inferring meaning from what is stated and implied, and being able to retrieve key information from the text whilst also drawing in other skills relevant to the reading aspect of the national curriculum.

Because of the repetitive pattern and rhythm, this book could be adapted for reader's theater to build students' fluency. Great story with fun rhythmic lines that build on the story, along the lines of "the house that jack built. The second fairly obvious observation is that the format of the story, the cumulative or House-that-Jack-Built format, works well for this tale in which each thing is directly related to the next. Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain by Verna Aardema takes place on a plain in Africa where animals eat and people live. I would ask students to think about what would happen to their community if they didn't get rain for a long time.Its been more than a decade since I’ve read that book aloud to one of my children but I can still recite it word for word. Appropriate for KS1 this magical tale uses rhyming words, repetition and similes, which makes this book an interesting read with poetry intertwined throughout and would act well as an introduction to poetry or even as an extension piece. Ki-pat is a herder and he watches the desiccation of the land and the suffering of his cattle and the wild animals.
