About this deal

Not because I think sports lack an inherent value, but for me personally I never happened to find enjoyment in moving around without a clear goal, getting tired, and having to watch other people who are in far better physical condition than I am. It’s not checking to see if you’ve done the uppercut properly, because it’s got no way of telling that.

You can unlock tickets which can be used for a specific trainer’s item, but the ability to purchase those items are unlocked separately and completely at random. It has a wealth of excellent accessibility options, wherein you can avoid motions you can’t make and tweak other essential things, but aside from a couple of new instructors, some new songs, and some fancier graphics and UI, it’s not really a new game. These tracks are catchy enough during the workout to keep you going, and the fact that you can swap tracks between different exercises is a great touch. All nine of them have unique personalities, but no matter who you choose, they’ll be constantly reminding you to engage your core, breathe out when you punch, keep each movement separate. Nothing in Fitness Boxing is remarkably bad: the controls work as well as they could and, some performance issues aside, you can still get a half decent workout as long as you’re willing to put the effort in (and aren’t tempted to just sit on the couch and flick the Joy-Con once you realise that works just as well). The game may not replace an actual personal trainer, but it still holds up as a decent alternative, especially during these strange times.

The game asks you to time your punches along to the beat of a handful of instrumental tracks from big name artists. This allows you to set an alarm on each day of the week, causing your connected controllers to violently vibrate at a designated time. I've been playing the first daily for the last 3 months, and there are many instances where the subtitles aren't voiced, which is pretty shoddy when you consider how few lines there actually are.

More items of clothing and accessories can also be unlocked by completing your daily exercises and obtaining achievements. I’ve noticed, for instance, that you can usually throw a straight instead of a hook as long as the timing is correct. The exercises themselves can be engaging, and it’s nice to keep track of your progress (and the game does give you a fitness age that seems arbitrary, I kept getting in the low 20s although I am far from that), but the amount of unlockables and achievements (which were added to this game and not present in the first) aren’t really enough to keep you going if you don’t like the thought of constantly throwing punches. This isn’t necessarily the game at fault, rather my dyspraxia seriously acting up… I may have actually nearly fallen over a couple times to be honest. I found myself burning around 400-600 calories (by the game’s estimation) after a 45 minute workout. Whenever I see art for this game I get excited and think it's a new "Feel The Magic/Rub Rabbits" game and get really excited. However, I find that when I’m mindful of my body, it works like a charm; I should be doing so for the good of the exercise, anyway – not just to achieve points in a game. It’s a credit limit that’s sits alongside your PayPal account which you can use for your online purchases.
