About this deal

For some years these ranged from dolphin trainer to animal shelter vet but then, at fifteen, she had an epiphany involving John and Robert Kennedy and decided to become a lawyer instead. Frozen Charlotte is a book about a young girl named Sophie who has an unfortunate event which occurs in the first part of the story; the unexpected death of her friend.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Frozen Charlotte; I mean, the cover alone looks scary enough, so I didn’t know whether the story would live up to that creepiness. I could almost imagine this book being played out as a movie, one with a lot of silence and creep-up-on-you scenes. The descriptions were at times, very vivid, and I could almost "hear" the scratching of minuscule fingertips on a glass cabinet, desperate to be unleashed. So Sophie arrives at her uncle's house, which used to be a girls schoolhouse that was shut down after a series of murders had occurred, to spend the summer with her cousins - Cameron, Piper and Lilias. And Lilias seemed like she was just there as a plot point, someone to move the story along when it came to a halt. The brutality of the scenes and the haunting creep of dread that infuse every single chapter make this a macabre dream for any horror fan. I'm not a massive fan of anything to do with talking/killer dolls so even I found the frozen charlottes a little creepy.

I'm sure it was due to being introduced to horror films and The X-Files at a very young age, but I digress. Thankfully, she dropped out just before the point where all students must submit to the personality-removing process that is a compulsory part of being an esteemed member of the legal profession. There are plenty of odd things going on in the Craig household, but a large number of them revolve around the strange behaviour of the family themselves, and the secrets they are each keeping. Her cheerful tone had disappeared for the first time since I’d arrived so I didn’t dare ask any more questions. It did seem like some of the characters made questionable decisions, like why would Sophie’s Uncle stay in that house after all the bad things happened to his kids? The author was definitely very good at creating a creepy atmosphere, I spent most of the book creeped out. If you’re scared of needles, just a warning (as I am too) there are a few scenes involving needles in people’s eyes, so I’d just flick past those bits! I think I found out about this book from someone’s Halloween TBR and added it to my list as soon as they started talking about it and now this review has made me want to read it even more!Although dubious about this book at the beginning – mainly due to the plot device of using a Ouija-board app ( yes, app) to invoke the ghost that the whole plot hinges on – I ended up actually rather enjoying this creepy tale. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. She’s determined to find out more about the incidents that keep occurring and why her Uncle’s house is plagued with bad luck. This is a proper old school horror, it is YA so no extreme gore or violence but it is still chillingly spooky. The suspense throughout was excellent – the tension building up, almost suffocating both me and the characters, was brilliant, and by the end I felt really close to Sophie, Cameron, Lilias and Piper.

Alex Bell’s chilling novel is part of the Red Eye series, perfect for fans of Juno Dawson’s Say Her Name and Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood. So determined, in fact, that she recklessly leaps into action every single time a creepy noise or sensation occurs.
