About this deal

It is notable, for example, that by far the most popular opening represented is the Queen's Gambit Declined; by contrast, today's favorite Sicilian Defense is found in just one game. I also wanted to say that I have improved A LOT lately, not only my results (that for me is secondary in this stage) but in the way I understand the game. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

Now I realice that this comes not only by getting used to read the variations but also because of the better understanding of what's going on in the board. It would be nice to have this as an e-book with annotated pgns, but apparently his widow has not been very receptive to publishing deals. Shows how the struggle for space and tempo creates strengths and weaknesses that lead to attacking opportunities. A student in the chess club I started at school this year managed to win the right to represent our province at his grade level in next month's Canadian national chess tournament, so time to get some new training materials.

GAME 4, KING'S GAMBIT DECLINED, 1891, was one of eight games Blackburne played simultaneously, blindfolded! At this point, players may find that they can get a win here and there, but they usually fall victim to other players' plans. There are also diagrams every few moves, showing the current postions of all the pieces, so you can not only get a better idea of where the pieces are, but can check you have made the right moves if you are playing these games on your own board. Both these methods help me to actually visualise the game as I read through, and play, the games themselves.

Nf3 Nc6) and unfortunately I bought it based on a lot of these reviews(One of which is backed up by a photo of the wrong edition! Chernev does not repeat himself, but drums up new insight and wit every time the first move is repeated. Analyze moves as much by where the pawn has moved as by what space it has left empty: pawn moving out-of-step leave a diagonal for B to infiltrate, and has left its post of defending the knight. While this is a great book, there are some areas where it is showing its age (having first been issued nearly a half century ago).

Finally, why oh why are the Chapter headers for each game the site where the game was played rather than the players? This makes it easy to follow along and reap the rewards of his wisdom, assimilating what makes a bad move, a good move, or a winning move. Chernev's book, after all these years, is still easy to follow and a great guide to understanding and learning better chess. Part one is mostly 1e4 openings with a kingside attack where white dominates after forcing black to move a kingside pawn. Because this one is in algebraic notation, it's a much better choice and I wish I had read it ten years ago!

When describing a move similar to one previously described, most books do not repeat the analysis previously given. One of the first books I owned, Chernev's THE FIRESIDE BOOK OF CHESS guided me through the many facets of chess during my formative years. Nevertheless, I've found my rating rise from somewhere around 1200 to just over 1500 in the reading of these pages. Unfortunately I didn't spot this, not starting to read the book until more than 60 days from puchasing si unable to request refund from vendor. So, when something doesn't quite add up according to a computer, the principles behind them are definitely helpful.I am not really sure what “the” correct way is, but what I do is to look up the game in my database on go through the game two or maybe three times pretty fast. The author can better relate to the reader and provide them the sort of insight that may be lost on stronger players. If you haven't got a chess book, then I can think of no better way to start a collection than this one.
