About this deal

In 2011, Penguin Modern Classics paired "The Living Daylights" with "From a View to a Kill" (from For Your Eyes Only) in a small compilation titled The Living Daylights.

The assassin, Trigger, was partly based on Amaryllis Fleming, Ian's half-sister, a concert cellist with blonde hair, and Fleming managed to get a passing reference to her in the story, saying: "Of course Suggia had managed to look elegant, as did that girl Amaryllis somebody. The agent is attached to the UN and M is sending Bond to tell her that the CIA is close to identifying her. Originally titled "Reflections in a Carey Cadillac", it was however first published under the name "Agent 007 in New York" in the New York Herald Tribune in October 1963. He was not chosen for the polar party, but was part of the support party which accompanied them for part of the way. But it shows Flemings skill of description, but here it lacks his usual strength which makes boring stuff come alive. In the 2015 film Spectre, the character of Oberhauser was used as the father of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, and a former caretaker of Bond in his youth. What we have here is a fairly dark tale that shows Bond's taste for a little revenge when the job gets too close to home. But they are never long enough to create enough tension/excitement or enjoyment of the characters (which is part of what I love in the Bond novels). The film also used the plot device of auctioning of a Fabergé egg at Sotheby's from "The Property of a Lady"; as with the story the auction item was described as being the same "property of a lady". Thus, Bond, ensconced in a dumpy apartment, waits for three nights for Agent 272 to make his run, a .

And, of course, there is Smythe's famous Octopussy, his pet name for the giant Octopus living in the coral reef off of his bungalow who ends up having a surprising role to play in the story. Bringing down the curtain on the world's most famous secret agent, Fleming's final collection, slim as it is, yet manages to entertain and impress. At this point, I can safely say that the most risqué parts of the books were, with few exceptions, the covers.

Most of the time, the Bond movies have little to do with the actual books, like Goldeneye (not even a short story), or The World is Not Enough (family motto mentioned in a Bond book). It could easily have become a boring story but, instead, Fleming manages to ratchet up the tension, giving us a taste of what his character must have felt in his vigils in a blacked-out apartment. The critic for The Times Literary Supplement wrote that the book was "slight and predictable, and usual sex and violence yield to a plausible use of ballistics and marine biology". Beginning in 1939 he served as a liaison between the Navy and the other secret services, where he was privy to the highest levels of intelligence and became known for his creativity in planning operations, work that inspired his later novels. In 2008, the stories in Octopussy and the Living Daylights were combined with those of For Your Eyes Only to form a new Penguin Books compilation titled Quantum of Solace as a tie-in with the film.

The topics chosen by Fleming were familiar ground for him to cover, with hidden gold, tropical fish and the wartime exploits of commandos all coming from elements of his past. Except for the presence of an actual octopus in both the story and the film, they are wholly dissimilar. The Property of a Lady: In London Bond attends an auction to identify who is paying a Russian agent.

Bond muses that even though 272 is safe, the mission will be considered a failure because he did not kill Trigger, and he hopes that M will strip him of his 00 number for it. Condition: Fine: Complete set of 14 Bond titles published to celebrate the 100th birthday of Ian Fleming (28 May 2008); original bindings with hard spine tips and straight boards with sharp corners; no previous owner's marks or gift dedications; very clean and straight end papers and text blocks with no spotting or tanning. In 1987 Eon used the plot of "The Living Daylights", almost unchanged, for a section of their 1987 film of the same name. In other words, The Living Daylight is a little gem, on the strength of which I’ll be happy to give Bond another chance. Two of these titles were made into full-length films only because they were the only two that had half-decent endings and enough of a back-story to build a script around.
