There is one character I would have liked to have been more defined and developed but she did not cause me to put this one done! I have found that the quality of sleep is never as good during the daytime as it is during the normal expected hours of night-time. We don't get any real closure on the problems that came to light in James and Ellie's marriage or Nathan's situation.

I guess it's an accurate portrayal of that sort of middle class society but I found it pretty alienating and irritating to read it being accepted as normal. It’s not a good sign when you’re over half way through the book but the story hasn’t gotten through everything on the blurb yet. The author introduces us to the central characters with just enough background to know what is important to them, what drives them…and then she introduces the delicious dilemma which centres around the money. Ellie, the middle sibling starts off thinking the same, but her husband Jamie discloses information that makes them want the money more. At the same time one of the nurses appeared and advised me that she would take over and look after our ingrowing toenail casualty. It is an interesting idea for a novel, and is written with plenty of cliff-hangers to keep the reader interested.

Ellie and her husband James don’t want to do anything that would expose the cash to inheritance tax. An evening spent in a London hotel with my favourite man with all expenses paid, I find quite appealing. There is one chapter in this book where I was so immersed in the story that I was actually shouting “NOOOOO” and my heart was hammering! Family dynamics endlessly fascinate me and I love books which feature family dramas - the central dilemma in the book was a clever way of unpicking characters and unravelling relationships! I loved that, in addition to giving us a twisty, compelling story, Clarke also explores some big questions — about the insidious power of money, about personal integrity and honesty — and challenges us to consider what we might do in similar circumstances. Declare it as part of his estate, risking losing a huge chunk to inheritance tax, or divvy it up between the three?
