About this deal

When she arrives home to police cars, lights and an active investigation, she's horrified to learn her kid brother had been viciously attacked.

Be forewarned that is a lot going on flashing back and forth with the timelines but the reader will find everything is relevant leading up to the shocking and surreal climatic ending! A mix of mystery and some minor fantastical elements comes together in a wonderful story that is actually quite straight-forward.He was straight up despicable, yet the events of the book seemed to confirm he was right since it never addressed the reason for why the book had power in the first place. Harkaway does an excellent job of giving each character (some of whom you can see in the book trailer above) a unique voice. The author does mention in his acknowledgment that he had to oversimplify things a bit to make them feel more entertaining.

Cummerbund were a deer or a halibut, they would excite pleasurable anticipation in those fond of rich foods and delicacies. You know the sort: those people who can make people disappear, cover up situations, appease the police. I also enjoy when a book has many characters since it can make a story so much more intriguing when it is written well which this novel certainly was. After reading his third book, I still think Whisper Man is my favorite work of the author, but I enjoyed this book even more.

With both the audio and digital copies I still struggled to follow along no matter which version I attempted. The great thing about a thriller that moves backwards and forwards in time is all of the nuance and backstory that can make the present day action that much more intense. This is, no doubt, a hyperactive bit of storytelling, but despite all the hybridity and genre-bending, Angelmaker doesn't feel gimmicky. A tragical-comical-historical-pastoral novelist, if you like; or – more precisely in the case of this second book – a fantasy-gangster-espionage-romance novelist.
