About this deal

The book also includes pictures of Michaela from her time in the orphanage right up to her life today as a prima ballerina. Offering accounts on conflict, adoption and the ballet dancing industry, this is a truly inspiring and emotional read! Michaela's own dedication, hard work, and passion for ballet have taken her far but she wrote this book along with Elaine, her adoptive mother, to be an inspiration to all girls to pursue their dreams. I questioned myself on what I can give while jotting down names I'm sure I will enjoy in the future. With classics such as Ted Hughes's The Iron Man and award-winners including Emma Carroll's Letters from the Lighthouse, Faber Children's Books brings you the best in picture books, young reads and classics.

I support a small children home in India where orphan/vulnerable/poverty-stricken children are being given the tools and support to achieve their best. Michaela DePrince's story has me questioning whether or not I can love what I will be doing for the rest of my life as much as she did, despite the fact it lacks the deeper meaning ballet has for her. But when Mr Silver disappears, and a shadow from the past threatens everything, the Emporium and all its wonders begin to crumble. But ultimately, it didn't really matter because we all know what she will go onto, we know that she already has the career that she's aspiring to for so much of the book. Michaela is also able to start dancing, something she has wanted to do ever since she found a magazine with a ballerina on the cover (still in the orphanage at this time). Her teacher once brings a magazine for Michela, where she was first introduced to the concept of Ballet. Read this book whilst on holiday in Spain, I’ve always been a keen ballet dancer And had a massive love for it and this book captures the essence and importance of ballet in many peoples lives no matter the background. One day when Michaela DePrince - then Mabinty Barunga - was outside and was caught in a severe wind storm, a page from a magazine blew into a her face.

However there were so many things left out that could have been included without going to very great length, and that would have made the story come alive. Hope in a Ballet Shoe: Orphaned by war, saved by ballet: an extraordinary true story, by Elaine and Michaela DePrince is the stunning biography of Michaela’s journey from the bullets of Sierra Leone to the ballet of New York. This is the real life story of one of the most incredible and inspirational young people in the world. The straightforward way in which both Michaela and her mother, Elaine tackle racism and other issues is novel, and shows that when strengthened by family, even the most cutting of remarks can't stop someone great from reaching their full potential. Though the book doesn't hide the sacrifices made by Michaela and her parents, their selflessness, passion for life, and love for each other make those sacrifices look so small in comparison.Though they were motivated by money, and they were not the nicest men, they did lead me out of the horror of the war in Sierra Leone and into the arms of a loving mother. In a society in which ageing is no longer feared, and death is no longer an inevitability, children are an abomination. Michaela's early life was marred by death, violence and abuse, but now a talented ballerina, making her mark on the professional international stage, she is sharing her story. Together with her friend from Sierra Leone, Michaela was adopted by a remarkable family who not only gave them a home but also enabled Michaela to fulfil her dream of becoming a ballet dancer.
