About this deal

He struggles with his identity of a prince who should feel like he has everything, and a boy who feels like he has nothing. It all begins when a troll named Aslog tells young Cardan a story, which they revisit multiple times over the course of his life and the novella. It also showcased a lot of his past, both the bad and the good (mostly bad though) and through this, we could see his path towards wickedness - how everything started from the moment he took his first breath.

Trading Address (Warehouse) Unit E, Vulcan Business Complex, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EB. This is a heady blend of Faerie lore, high fantasy, and high school drama, dripping with description that brings the dangerous but tempting world of Faerie to life. We work closely with publishers and authors to ensure that we offer the best books on the market for your child. She has been a finalist for an Eisner and a Lodestar Award, and the recipient of the Mythopoeic Award, a Nebula, and a Newbery Honor. They indulged all their worst impulses, revenged themselves for the least offense, and took every last thing they wanted.

tale books we read when we were little with witches, trolls and that one person - who was both hero and villain. An illustrated addition to the New York Times bestselling Folk of Air trilogy that started with The Cruel Prince, from award-winning author Holly Black.Cardan is my favorite character in The Cruel Prince series (or any of Holly’s books, I think) and this truly was such a magical, wonderous, unforgettable addition to this world. Revealing a deeper look into the dramatic life of Elfhame’s enigmatic high king, Cardan, his tale includes delicious details of life before The Cruel Prince, an adventure beyond The Queen of Nothing, and familiar moments from The Folk of the Air trilogy, told wholly from Cardan’s perspective. Yeah, sure, I knew it was going to be about younger Cardan, but I really was anticipating more of his interactions with Jude in this. And yes, I am aware that this is less of a review of the book, and more of an insight to my Cardan obsession nobody asked for. Nicasia and Locke have much wanted character development in this book, too, and I am literally on my knees begging for Holly to just give us the trilogy in Cardan’s complete point of view.

Illustrator Rovina Ca did such an amazing job of capturing his likeness and personality in her work. In an interview with EW Black said "I planned a novella to go with the Folk of the Air series centered on Cardan, but I realized I couldn’t do justice to his story until the trilogy was over. How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories is an illustrated novella following Cardan Greenbriar, during many different stages in his life, while we slowly see all the different things that shaped him cruelly. You get to, finally, see the world through the eyes of the infamous ‘cruel prince’ and get a glimpse into how his mind works.Seeing all the background details to events that took place gives the reader such a better understanding almost like you’re in the mind of the character and nothing beats that!

Although not pivotal to the main plot and story it gives it an edge that it didn’t have before reading this. Aslog’s story changes as Cardan does, with a new ending and meaning for each retelling, each stage of his life. while i do wish more stories had been included, i love the motion of how each story flows into the next, almost feeling like a novella rather than an anthology. How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories is a breath of fresh air—the fairy tale atmosphere, the razor-sharp wit, the allure of the fey. While I loved every page of this, Holly Black also managed to exclude every scene that I wanted to see.

There short story's that add some great info to the folk of air trilogy, especially on cardans side as it’s all about him. A prince of Faerie who once slept in the hay of the stables listening to the sounds of faerie steeds, of deer and elk, and even the croaks of great riding toads, who listened to the stories of Aslog of the West. She tells a story about a boy with a heart of stone, who finds himself in a predicament with a monster girl who won’t scare him away, until his heart starts beating again.
