About this deal

The Hydra is far more vivid, with the reds of tongues quite apparent, and the colour a garish green which, having seen close-up images of the model involved, is faithful.

Will a pulse-pounding pace, bloody violence and lifelike computer-generated effects create a more real, tangible world filled with heart and emotion? The adaptation doesn't take too many liberties with the root mythological tale, which varies considerably depending on which source is consulted. Starring Todd Armstrong, Nancy Kovack, Gary Raymond, Laurence Naismith, Niall MacGinnis, Honor Blackman, Nigel Green, Michael Gwynn, Douglas Wilmer, Jack Gwillim, John Cairney, Patrick Troughton, Andrew Faulds. The highly individualistic Herrmann sets so strong a tone for every scene that it's mentally difficult to separate his music from Harryhausen's images. Considering what has been achieved with a limited source, and the fact that the same limited source is on here as well, Sony's BD of Jason And The Argonauts gets a strong 7 out of 10.

The lilac and blue distinction between the Harpies is much more apparent now, no longer are they just smudgy browns an greys. It's an amazingly entertaining track that details both the production and its impact on both cult audiences and filmmakers, including Peter Jackson. As an added bonus, Sony has also included the film's original mono mix for purists not wishing to experience the 5. But this is the nature of the beast - and certainly not something that you can put down to the transfer.Fine embroideries, the texture on costumes, the foliage and leaves on trees, the surface of masonry and rock walls, the surface, even, of the sea - all things that benefit from the greater resolution. And to complicate things a little further, this is the type of film that probably appears to have a whole lot more than it really does. With the amount of grain still intact DNR doesn't seem to be an issue, and there may be some edge enhancement but it's most likely just due to the application of the effects.

This can be a little bombastic at times, but it really enhances the action, giving the film a more immersive, and more modern feel. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. First up, the Blu-ray hosts two brand-new audio commentaries, one featuring Ray Harryhausen himself! With a crack crew of athletes and warriors, including the popular Hercules (Nigel Green), Jason sets sail in a proud ship built by Argos (Laurence Naismith).I can see why Jason and the Argonauts is huge with Harryhausen fans like me, but I can also see why it's not a really great film--Jason's quest is very selfish and we never actually see him reap the rewards he wants. There's some (albeit minimal) added directionality, with the most noticeable being a few swooshes from Jason's sword when he is fending off the hydra. Tipped off by Famous Monsters magazine, many of us waited anxiously for the next jolting effects scene to begin.
