That Mario Testino is being showcased at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin is fitting: Newton was famous for his nude portraits of women, and his abstract renderings of the body which saw skin and limbs spotlighted in isolation. Coinciding with an exhibition at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, the collection centers on the naked body , blurring the line between public and private personas as well as laying Testino’s archive bare with a number of previously unseen photographs . Through 50 photographs from archives and series that have never been seen before, the book sheds new light on personalities from Kate Moss and Amber Valletta to anonymous, androgynous men.

The 50 featured photographs center on the naked body, alternately exploring and pushing the traditions and boundaries between sex, gender identity, and fashion. Simultaneously running alongside the Testino-dedicated exhibition is Helmut Newton: Unseen, an exploration of the bold black-and-white sexually-charged photography Newton is known for.

The playful, unfettered atmosphere of his studio is captured through effervescent portraits of anonymous, androgynous men as well as supermodels such as Kate Moss and Amber Valletta, which even at their most daring, never slip into the vulgar. A special highlight are previously unseen photographs shot in the Testino studio , in which an exuberant atmosphere intermingles with the implicit frisson of nudity and where playfully amorous dynamics never slip into the obscene or pornographic. Manfred Spitzer is a German psychiatrist, psychologist and neuroscientist, as well as a popular author in the conjunction of all of these fields.

Undressed” by Mario Testino is a site-specific installation comprising fashion and nude photos, with numerous unpublished studio portraits.
