About this deal

There’s also a strong argument to take a Dunland Chieftain over one of the named heroes too, just to have access to Heroic March - happily, these come included with the Warriors box, which is one of the few nice things that can be said about it. The profile for Eomer in particular is also missing heroic actions (because, as was mentioned above, they are avoiding those and only giving you Might to boost your die rolls). Not only would this lower the points level some, but the strength of your heroes would be dropped, forcing the Isengard player to work on using his Uruks to stall out the big heroes.

However, for the reasons we talked about earlier, I still think the Battlehost is such good value that you’d be better off just shelving the other models until you feel like playing a different list – so we’ll be branching off from list 1. I’ve built the list with the models you get in the Warrior and Wildman packs, but you should keep in mind that this is pretty sub-optimal, and the list is instantly improved if you replace all 2h weapons with their single handed equivalent (and a shield where possible. These rules don't have everything in them, but instead focus on what's relevant to the Battlehosts themselves (a subset of the magical powers, no specialized heroic actions, a subset of the war gear, and a very short list of special rules). This list is worth taking for a spin if you’ve just dipped your toe in to the game and bought your first battlehost. All we ask is the product still be in its original packaging and you have your proof of purchase and we'll be happy to help. The additional models here are the Fighting Uruk Hai Warrior Command, Uruk Hai Siege Troops and Uruk Hai Berserkers. It’s essentially a completed game, with the current release schedule reflecting a desire for it to be easier for people to start the game (new game in a box set including terrain, all plastic faction starters with a substantial saving against retail) while acknowledging it doesn’t need the sort of release model 40k or AoS use because the rules have been perfected over six editions, with the core mechanics unchanged. GW have created boxes with a new, modern plastic character and two boxes worth of infantry or cavalry.

There is nothing wrong with playing a 250 point game to get a feel for the system and then decide you need a monster, or another couple of characters, or some elite infantry. Miniatures are supplied unassembled and unpainted – we recommend Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Colour paints. Because riders can lose their horses and get replaced by foot models, you will want to keep six of your foot models to use for this. Will the Riders of Rohan and the Army of the Dead arrive in time to aid the White city of Gondor against the Dark Lord of Mordor and his orc hordes?Gondor has a lot of cheap heroes, and a number of elite infantry options (Citadel Guard, Guardians of the Fountain Court, Osgiliath Veterans where you are using Faramir or Boromir) which give you access to Fight 4, which you absolutely want to make sure you win fights against Orcs.

There are a large number of historical miniatures companies out there, and several product ranges are suitable for padding or proxying Dunland troops. Mordor have one of the biggest model ranges in Lord of the Rings, and it naturally pairs with the new starter set to give you more than 700 points, needing only some characters to give a legal army. They also don't tell you what kind of horse Eomer's riding (more on that in a minute), so he'll be the equivalent of a 120-125pt hero depending on how you choose to build your Eomer. This path assumes that you’d want to collect general Isengard models with a few Dunland options, and then want to have the ability to run the pure Dunland LL. All 48 plastic figures are included with their corresponding bases, but unpainted and require assembly.

But let's dig a little deeper into what Gandalf lost: he retained Immobilize/Command (which are both good at dealing with the enemy hero you'll have on the other side of the board) and he retained Terrifying Aura (which is good since all of the warriors in the other battlehosts are C2-3). Yes, Eomer normally has a rule that makes him go berserk if Theoden or Eowyn die, but since you can't field Theoden or Eowyn in this list, they omitted the rule (awesome job, team, awesome job). We’ve gone for the Heroes of Dunland pack here as they give great bang for your buck – three heroes that all bring something different as well as buffing some of your troops. I suppose the first point to address is that while the Isengard Battlehost is a great place to start in the faction, it is also in an odd spot, in that most Isengard lists and especially the Legendary Legions will use either Uruk Scouts or Warriors, but rarely both - especially if you’re looking to optimize your list. The Legendary Legions pivot out of this core quite nicely but tend to be more purchase-heavy, so it’s really a case of picking your poison – or just keep accumulating enough models that you can run them all!
