The majority of Powers John's Lane 12 Year is aged in used bourbon casks, with a small contribution of distillate aged in used Oloroso sherry casks. It is somewhat similar to Redbreast 12 Year Irish Whiskey but it uses much less of the Sherry Cask component, is a higher proof and is non-chill filtered. To me this gives Powers John's Lane a richer taste and a more satisfying pour.Had a dram of the John’s Lane Release? Add your own thoughts in the comments below. Powers 12 John’s Lane Release Review In addition to Powers Gold label, a 12-year-old premium blend, and several single pot still whiskeys have been released under the Powers banner in recent years: The first is the “cut” of the distillate, which is akin to the Fates cutting the strands of life. The first liquid (heads) and the last liquid (tails) include toxic compounds, and are discarded. The center is called the heart. From the same pot still mashbill, Powers takes a heavy cut, Redbreast takes a medium cut and the Spots take a lighter cut of each run.

Powers is a brand of Irish whiskey produced by the Irish Distillers subsidiary of Pernod Ricard. Historically a single pot still whiskey, the flagship Powers Gold Label brand was the first Irish whiskey ever to be bottled. [1] Powers Gold Label was the best-selling whiskey in Ireland. [2]Powers Three Swallow Release, 43.2%, single pot still, matured mainly in ex-Bourbon casks, with some input of whiskey matured in Oloroso Sherry casks [13] a b Foley, Ray (2006). Best Irish Drinks. Naperville, Illinois: Sourcebooks, Inc. pp. 12–13. ISBN 1402250134. Nose: Rich! Dense honey, dried apricots, nutmeg, brown sugar. Decadent and full. Only a very light touch of the single pot still signature oiliness, which usually smells to me like soot and engine grease (but in a good way?). A rest in the glass develops the hearty coconut note that I find in Redbreast 12.

Powers John's Lane Irish Whiskey tries to make us have a glimpse of its gorgeous history at John's Lane Distillery and the single pot still whiskey they used to make there. The distillery was closed in 1976 but now, the whiskey is recreated at the new Midleton Distillery for us to savor. Powers John's Lane has always been one of the gorgeous bottles for Powers fans. Prior to sitting down with their global brand ambassador to taste through the range, the whiskey I loved most from the Powers Irish whiskey range is the Powers John’s Lane release, so easy drinking and just a proper drop of whiskey that probably does not get as much attention as it deserves. But was that the case when I went through them all as a family? Read on GreatDrammers, read on. In 1961, a Coffey still was installed in John's Lane Distillery, allowing the production of vodka and gin, in addition to the testing of grain whiskey for use in blended whiskey. [8] This was a notable departure for the firm, as for many years the big Dublin distilling dynasties had shunned the use of Coffey stills, questioning if their output, grain whiskey, could even be termed whiskey. [12] However, with many of the Irish distilleries having closed in the early 20th century in part due to their failure to embrace a change in consumer preference towards blended whiskey, Powers were instrumental in convincing the remaining Irish distilleries to reconsider their stance on blended whiskey. [8]With a whiskey industry that prospered for hundreds of years, Ireland helped establish a taste for whiskey throughout the western world. Legendary producer Bushmills was issued what is now the oldest license to distill spirits in 1608, and within decades Ireland boasted more than 100 distilleries. In 1989, Irish Distillers itself became a subsidiary of Pernod-Ricard following a friendly takeover. The second difference comes with the aging. Each of the different expressions uses a different regimen of ages and barrels. Powers Gold Label, 43% ABV, triple-distilled blend of pot still and grain whiskey, matured in ex- bourbon American Oak casks, non-chill filtered [13] If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
