This book is an artifact of the person I was and the kind of writer I was in 2013, and that's interesting, especially because in some ways, I'm a very different person and writer now. The historical fiction wasn't focused on too much; just enough information and descriptions were given to help give us a feel of this time period. So I’m not sure if it’s the writing or the fact that I knew it was suppose to have the air of a film noir, but man, did I read a lot of this book in my head as Alice doing a monologue to me/the audience, ha. I must admit I am one of Lesley Pearse's biggest fans. I have read all of her books and have not been disappointed with any of them. Dead to Me is the first novel I have read by Lesley Pearse and I hope it will not be my last. In the book we follow the lives of two young girls, Ruby and Verity, as they charter the course of their lives through the 1930’s post war era through to the Second World War. Penned in the style of the Crime Noir genre, Caslin is a deep character, as flawed as he is brilliant, battling his own demons as much as those he is pitted against. Readers who enjoy gritty, atmospheric thrillers will find the series a must read. Verity has a secret that she cannot open up to anyone about. She is ashamed of herself and these feelings of inadequacy impact all the various relationships in her life. Ruby, on the other hand blossoms into a beautiful young woman. But Ruby has a past that is very difficult to run away from and a present that she must deal with head on.This story features Bree who can see and hear ghosts and has always been a bit of an outsider in her village, the girl who talks to herself. An elderly neighbour has been murdered and her three resident ghosts help her investigate the crime. Something weird is happening and Bree finds the ghosts are growing somehow more tangible, more able to touch the living world. Ambrose is a blind Victorian world traveller, Pax is a Roman warrior, and Edward is a disgraced prince obsessed with naked duchesses. I really enjoyed this compelling story, the plot has plenty of depth to it with some suspense thrown it. Dead To Me is a heart-warming and evocative tale that is a real delight to read, if you are looking for a book to escape the demands of every day life for a few hours I would highly recommend you read Dead To Me. There is a reversal of fortunes as Verity's stepfather turns out to be an embezzler and is seriously violent towards Verity. Verity and her mother need a roof over their heads and move in with an aunt. Ruby comes to find herself loved and cared for the first time in her life when she is sent to Devon to live with Wilby. Additionally, Ruby finds herself romantically involved and is happy. Verity and Ruby retain their friendship through letters and visits. They exchange confidences and secrets and cannot imagine their lives without each other. Until Verity finds herself in the position where she feels she has no choice but to betray Ruby. This leads Ruby to express the title of this book in a letter, you are dead to me, to Verity. With Britain being torn apart by war, will the two survive to be able reconcile? And oh yes, the writing. Mary McCoy has done an amazing job with Dead To Me. She got the who 1940s Hollywood vibe pat down and she did an excellent job of keeping me intrigued…and as a reader who knows close to nothing about the era, it was fascinating to learn about it, while also feeling like I’d been in that era forever. So, I let her be invisible. It didn’t seem like much to ask. If I’d known she would develop a taste for it, that one day she’d disappear altogether, maybe I would have done something else. Maybe I would have tried harder to stop her. For Verity, as she remains in London, she must try and salvage whatever she can. Through a life-altering event, the friendship between the two becomes very fragile and sadly they remain aloof for many years.
