About this deal

In 2015, Johnson Matthey sold its gold and silver refining operations to Asahi Holdings, Inc., a Japanese firm. [18] Operations edit Metallic elements are common in eLNO battery cathode technologies, autocatalysts, industrial catalysts, healthcare devices and pharmaceuticals. However, combining and applying these elements to the specific applications requires an in-depth understanding of metallurgy and specific reaction, manufacturing and development processes. In addition, sustainability must be a high priority; it is essential that raw elemental metals are acquired sustainably over the long term. Innovation in the chemical industry relies on combining the right elements with the right expertise to make a reaction or product successful.

JM’s computational technologies combine advanced software tools and large databases to rapidly predict the best existing natural enzyme for a desired chemical reaction or process. In cases where an ideal natural enzyme cannot be found, JM turns to enzyme engineering. But instead of the widely used directed evolution approach, JM leverages its smart library design. In this process, thousands of enzyme variants are computationally screened by analysing the changes in their amino acid sequence in the context of their encoded 3D structure. Subsequently, libraries of enzyme variants are created, with the latest molecular biology techniques, produced and extracted from E. coli for testing in their ability to catalyse the desired reaction or process. Although this method drastically reduces the number of enzyme variants that need to be screened, the number can still be in the range of tens of thousands of enzyme variants. High-throughput material handling and analytics are vital to speed up the process. The future of biocatalysis In August 2018, Johnson Matthey started the construction of a new factory in Gliwice in Poland. The plant covers an area of approximately 23,000 m 2 and is costing about PLN 450 million. The project will create about 400 new jobs. The plant consists of two production lines which will manufacture a range of catalysts. [20] Smith, F.J. (1973). "Standard Kilogram Weights: A Story of Precision Fabrication" (PDF). Johnson Matthey Opens Major New European Emission Control Catalyst Plant in Macedonia". Business Wire. 30 January 2012 . Retrieved 30 January 2012. Transitioning to greener chemistry and more sustainable manufacturing processes are among the pharmaceutical industry’s biggest challenges. With the global population expected to exceed nine billion by 2050 – increasing demand for finite resources– it’s vital that manufacturers boost sustainability and reduce the environmental impact of their processes.Another challenge to the pharmaceutical industry is the increasing size of the elderly population. A World Health Organization report on global health and ageing projects a growth in the number of people aged 65 and over from the estimated 524 million in 2010 to nearly 1.5 billion in 2050. To accommodate this expanding and ageing population and meetlower, or net zero, carbon goals, the pharmaceutical industry needs cleaner, less wasteful technologies. That approach is vital to meeting the environmental, economic and social demands of future medication. In 2008 Johnson Matthey acquired Argillon, a business specialising in catalysts, for €214 million. [13] In 2009, Johnson Matthey opened a catalyst manufacturing plant in North Macedonia. [21] It was expanded in 2012 [22] and went on to become the largest exporter in North Macedonia. [23] Environmental performance edit The company was one of the first FTSE 100 companies to produce an integrated annual report and won the Best Annual Report in the FTSE 100 in the ICSA Hermes Transparency in Governance Awards in 2012, which recognised how sustainability issues were 'described in a way that clearly links them to business strategy and performance, rather than leaving them in a silo or on the sidelines.' [16]Over the past decade, many pharmaceutical companies have opted for green chemistry practices for drug discovery, development and manufacturing. This shift is being driven by the realisation that greener processes not only offer an environmental advantage but can be cheaper with less waste – providing a competitive edge. Beyond clean air and transportation uses, one of the most widely known applications of metal complexes in chemistry is to catalyse various industrial processes. Catalysis is an integral component of many industrial reactions. For instance, the Haber–Bosch process produces ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen, and this ammonia is then used for fertilisers. But it is only viable at a large scale using an iron catalyst. It is important to realise that biocatalysis and chemocatalysis are complementary technologies. When efficiently applied to the pharmaceutical process, these technologies can combine to greatly improve the drug manufacturing process, both economically and environmentally. When designing new processes for innovative APIs, it is important that pharmaceutical companies collaborate with experts in both of these fields. JM’s ability to leverage its wide-ranging catalysis expertise and manufacturing capabilities allows for faster and deeper integration of these technologies into manufacturing processes. JOHNSON MATTHEY PLC overview - Find and update company information - GOV.UK". Companies House. 11 April 1891 . Retrieved 5 September 2023. Battery technologies are central to electric vehicles, which have an increasing role in transportation strategies. The UK government has pledged that half of all new car sales will be hybrid or electric by 2030.

Enzyme-based catalysis has emerged as an innovative technology for chemical manufacturing that meets many of the core green chemistry principles. By developing and applying these technologies in the pharmaceutical industry, we can create significant and positive environmental change. JM, an applied science and sustainable technologies leader, is committed to applying its extensive bio- and chemo-catalysis capabilities to help build effective processes for the pharmaceutical and fine chemicals industries. The natural way Johnson Matthey sells its gold and silver refining business". The Daily Telegraph. 15 December 2014 . Retrieved 3 March 2019. One of the most pressing challenges facing the world today is the need for cleaner air. To achieve this, technologies are needed that reduce emissions in the transportation industry, and there is already a trend across the globe to reduce the proportion of solely petrol- or diesel-powered vehicles. With this comes the need for newer, cleaner power sources, such as batteries, to meet the demands of the transportation industry. While it will be some time before significant volumes of automotive batteries are in operation or at the end of their useful life, JM is looking at all areas of battery activities across their life cycle.

PGMs and metallurgical research are also essential components for developing solutions for cleaner air by reducing harmful emissions from vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. These vehicles produce various chemical contaminants that are known to be hazardous to human health. Improving air quality is about understanding how to convert pollutants – such as carbon monoxide, unburnt hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide compounds (NOx) – into innocuous emissions. Nature uses the life elementsto orchestrate reactions that produce molecules of incredible complexity Johnson Matthey expands Macedonia plant for emission control catalysts". Hydrocarbon Processing . Retrieved 11 March 2022. Johnson Matthey to buy Argillon for €214 million". Reuters. 18 April 2011 . Retrieved 30 January 2012.

In 2014, the company was shortlisted for Business in the Community's Responsible Business of the Year Award for its Sustainability 2017 programme. [17]

JM has widespread expertise in this field, with around one in every three vehicles globally containing a JM autocatalyst. JM’s catalytic converter innovations first began in the late 1960s with the two-way catalyst, which used platinum and rhodium. This was later improved in the three-way catalyst, which added palladium to the catalyst bed. Effectively, these catalysts combine oxidising and reducing capabilities. The platinum and palladium metals oxidise toxic carbon monoxide to less immediately harmful carbon dioxide and unburnt hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water, while the rhodium reduces NOx compounds into nitrogen.
