It provides comfortable multi-tasking for the most home and office users. Apparently, one of last month’s MWC announcements went under my radar. Not widely mentioned was news of the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3 Chromebook, a 15.6 budget convertible. This large laptop with an expected small price will be available in many global regions, including the U.S. Laptops usually feature a frontal webcam located on the display bezel. This laptop is no exception.
The Lenovo Flex 3 15 is a 15.6-inch convertible notebook series with a 360-degree hinge for multi-mode use as a laptop, tablet, or multimedia stand. With its form factor, specifications, and price, the Flex 3 15 competes directly against systems such as the Asus Flip Q502LA, Toshiba Radius P55W, and HP Envy x360 15. Since this is part of the IdeaPad 3 line, it’s definitely an entry-level, basic usage device. Still, seeing a 15.6-inch 1080p display for this type of machine is a nice surprise, as is the 300 nits of brightness and a pair of 2W speakers. There’s also mention of an NFC chip but I believe that is an error. I see no mention of NFC in the current user guide. It provides a lot of screen real estate, while avoiding bulkiness of the 17.3" laptops.

Full HD is the most common laptop screen resolution today. It provides a good image sharpness and a decent amount of space on the display for the user interface and programs. The laptop has a slot for full-size SD memory cards, used in many digital cameras. You can also use microSD cards with a card adapter. Alongside the Celeron chip is 4GB of system memory and just 64GB of eMMC-style storage. All told, it’s a pretty unimpressive technical line up that represents a bottom-rung Intel-powered solution. Were this a Windows laptop or convertible, that would be enough to have us running for the hills. However, the Chrome OS environment is both less demanding and also cloud-centric. So, outright performance and local storage are not as critical. Note that outside the U.S., the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3 Chromebook will be available with a higher-performing Celeron Silver N6000. That configuration will also support up to 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of eMMC 5.1 storage.
In all of these benchmarks, the Flex 3 came in significantly behind the more expensive and more powerful Acer, roughly equal with its non-Flex cousin, and comfortably ahead of the Chromebook Duet (which has an especially pokey Mediatek ARM processor). Alas, if you think that Lenovo has stumbled upon some hidden exception to the rules of physics and economics to fit such high-end features into a tiny enclosure at a palatable asking price, think again. The Flex 3's most significant compromise is its cramped, dim 11.6-inch HD display. Yes, you can touch it, but with a brightness of just 250 nits and a resolution below the 1080p (full HD) that we consider adequate for budget laptops, it's not all that pleasing a panel to look at.
