When buying Waterproof Boots, the quality of the product is going to be one of the factors that you really scrutinise before you commit to buying. Another factor that can be a great indication of product quality is the brand. Brands like Mammut are of course extremely well known, especially for Waterproof Boots. Featuring a Gore-Tex performance comfort lining, they are pretty darn waterproof – and I’ve had these in some pretty foul weather since buying them! Some all-day downpours in the Lakes and Scotland have been endured and beaten by these boots!

However, another REI salesperson told me this weekend REI's policy is to replace a product as closely as possible regardless of discounts given at the time, so it looks like I'll have a new pair if I want them or something equivalent if I don't. Major kudos to REI for the second salesperson (still don't know why the first one, and REI's call center, responded as they did). That got us thinking though, that we’re looking at every possible item from Mammut so it would be good to narrow our search down even further and only look at Mammut branded products within the Waterproof Boots category. After eventually deciding on the Mammuts over the incredibly comfortable Scarpa Terras, I set about not even using them for a while and instead still took my old Karrimors on my Toubkal trip in 2013. However, in September in Snowdonia I took these boots as a bit of a baptism of fire to break them in properly. These are definitely decent. They fit right out of the box and after several days wearing them around the house I took them for a 5hour womble around Dovedale and up Thorp Cloud. The downside to buying online is that you can’t actually get hold of the product to try it out first. With proper cleaning and care, your hiking boots will last you for many years and many miles along the trail.There are however some methods that you can use to determine a product’s quality without needing to physically have it. The material the product is made from is often a sign of the quality for Waterproof Boots. Take a look at the product details over at Go Outdoors to get a feel for this. I’ll admit they did take a little bit of breaking in, and on first outings they did feel a bit clunky and stiff, and I have encountered the odd blister in them, but that aside for the performance and feature set they are very good indeed.
