About this deal

Action from the get-go, this book hooks you from the first line. I’d heard some sob stories from farangs I‘d met and Leather’s take on what can and still does happen in ‘The Land of Smiles,’ rings very true; perhaps it even serves to educate those horny guys that come to Thailand and leave there brain at the airport! Pete, a British Journalist, is sent to Thailand to report on the various tourist points for a new travel book. The album was released on May 29, 1984, and became an outstanding global commercial success. [21] [22] [23] The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart for ten consecutive weeks [24] and remained in the top ten for 39 weeks from August 1984 to May 1985. In the United States it was certified 5× platinum. [25] In Germany, the album went 5× gold becoming one of the best selling albums in history. It peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart, where it was certified 3× platinum, remaining on the charts for 150 total weeks. It was certified 7× platinum for the shipment of over 700,000 copies in Canada by the Canadian Recording Industry Association. The album has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide. [26] [27] At the 1985 Grammy Awards, Private Dancer won four of the six awards for which it was nominated.

I loved the manner in which this book, the dialogues and the storyline was written. The manner in which the story unfolded and the view point of each character, Neither one being in the right or wrong – was in itself a thought-provoking treat.Access-restricted-item true Addeddate 2022-11-03 21:02:43 Autocrop_version 0.0.14_books-20220331-0.2 Bookplateleaf 0002 Boxid IA40753216 Camera Sony Alpha-A6300 (Control) Collection_set printdisabled External-identifier What Private Dancer is and what it represents are two profoundly important things. Firstly, is simply good story-telling, in fact story-telling at its best; as good as it gets. Secondly it is culturally-insightful and incredibly sociologically profound; it is essentially an exposé of any and all Asian cultures and how those cultures view, perceive and interact both with their own nationals and those from overseas. Private Dancer by Stephen Leather is a book that was tremendously well-received in Thailand. Bernard Trink from Bangkok Post – the biggest English-language daily in Thailand – believes that “ Private Dancer ought to be made available to every tourist at port of entry” and Pattaya Mail wrote that the book “should be compulsory reading for all first-timers to Thailand.” Gaar, Gillian G. (October 7, 2015). "Album Review: Tina Turner, 'Private Dancer' reissue". Goldmine . Retrieved January 29, 2022.

The novel is divided into small segments – each narrated by its respective character along the way. And it is absolutely intriguing to see how each person feels and thinks about the exact same situation as the story unfolds. What really took me by surprise reading this was how much it reminded me of some of the ex-pats I know here in Germany, and the insights I gained into their lives. Which is weird since NONE of these people are involved with prostitution or anything shady. The book offers a very dark and grim vision about Thailand but I guess that’s expected. The story should have drama and something interesting to talk about otherwise, it might get boring, I accept that. What is amazing is the manner in which the writer has managed to capture the essence of each character. He really hits a homerun in trying to decipher the cultural influence and thinking of each character. Christgau, Robert (1990). "Tina Turner: Private Dancer". Christgau's Record Guide: The '80s. Pantheon Books. p.414. ISBN 0-679-73015-X . Retrieved June 16, 2012. Even though the book is written keeping in mind only those 4 or 5 characters – the book as a whole acts as a manuscript in understanding how different people from different cultures and different environments think and communicate ideas, feelings and thoughts.
