LOST STARS by Claudia Gray is probably one of my top five Star Wars books with the others being THE THRAWN TRILOGY by Timothy Zahn and SHATTERPOINT by Matthew Stover. It is a book which doesn't talk about Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han, or the other characters but follows two original characters through the events of the Galactic Civil War (A New Hope to the Battle of Jakku following Return of the Jedi). The latest to fall under the Emperor’s control is the isolated mountain planet Jelucan, whose citizens hope for a more prosperous future even as the Imperial Starfleet gathers overhead….

Eight years after the fall of the Old Republic, The Galactic Empire now reigns over the known galaxy. Resistance to the Empire has been all but silenced. Only a few courageous leaders such as Bail Organa of Alderaan still dare to openly oppose Emperor Palpatine. Thane Kyrell a child in a rich family, and Ciena Ree, a poor valley girl, are the two central characters of our narrative. Childhood friends, whom despite their differences fight to help each other reach the lauded Royal Imperial Academy on Coruscant. From there they build carriers within the ranks of the Empire to varying degrees of success. Each exposed to the propaganda and its use in hiding the real evil of the Empire.

Warum? Weil es die Wurzeln des Imperiums und die gesamte klassische Trilogie durch die Augen zweier durchaus sympathischer Charaktere schildert, die sich nach Alderaan für zwei gänzlich unterschiedliche Wege entscheiden. LOST STARS ist dabei nicht so politisch angehaucht wie die Werke James Lucenos, aber auch nicht so oberflächlich wie die Charakterbiografien eines Ryder Windham. Claudia Grays Werk steht auf eigenen Beinen und erzählt seine Geschichte aus einer einzigartigen Perspektive, durch die Augen ihrer Protagonisten. Die Geschichte ist natürlich spannend, weil keiner von beiden eine Überlebensgarantie besitzt und schon das Titelbild von einem abstürzenden Sternenzerstörer geziert wird. Whether it is a young Princess Leia appearing at their passing out parade at the Academy, or Ciena chasing her Tantive IV ship – each appearance has impact, and it is fun to see the opinions and attitudes of our characters, and their friends including one Nash Windrider from Alderaan whom in my opinion steals the book. Wäre da nicht das Imperium. Denn Kadetten der Akademie dürfen keine innigen Beziehungen miteinander pflegen und sogar das noch rein freundschaftliche Verhältnis Thanes und Cienas wird zur Zielscheibe einer Ordnungsmaßnahme. Kaum ausgemustert ergibt sich für beide jedoch eine weitere Chance, die dann durch die Zerstörung Alderaans und Thanes Gewissensbisse zerstört wird. The reign of the Galactic Empire has reached the Outer Rim planet of Jelucan, where aristocratic Thane Kyrell and rural villager Ciena Ree bond over their love of flying. Enrolling at the Imperial Academy together to become fighter pilots for the glorious Empire is nothing less than a dream come true for the both of them. But Thane sours on the dream when he sees firsthand the horrific tactics the Empire uses to maintain its ironclad rule.

It was also fun to see characters such as Dak take a little bit of prominence on Hoth, and the return of a prequel favorite in Grand Vizer Mas Amedda as he resides in power following the Emperor’s death. Groß Moff Tarkin ist der erste bekannte Charakter, der innerhalb der Story auftaucht und das bereits ganz zu Beginn. In seiner Funktion als Statthalter in den Outer Rim Territories macht Tarkins Auftritt nicht nur Sinn, er ist auch höchst passend inszeniert. Jelucan wird nicht einfach gewaltsam besetzt, sondern mit dem Versprechen von Fortschritt und einem besseren Leben ins Imperium überführt. Interessant ist in diesem Fall natürlich, dass ein junger Lieutenant Piett zu Tarkins Entourage zu gehören scheint. Der Tarkin-Protege Piett wird später Captain der Executor und unter Vader zum Admiral aufsteigen. Perhaps the great writing of Gray is highlighted with the words “She stood before him at last. Their eyes met. And Ciena punched him in the gut, hard.” – I was literally blown away. So unexpected, yet so perfect for the character. Two star characters, with a love lost to war.

I like how the characters Forrest Gump their way through various events in Star Wars without feeling too forced. After all, they're assigned to Darth Vader's flagship and the elite of the Rebellion, so they're always going to be just off-camera so to speak. It gives a nice "boots on the ground" perspective to the cosmic conflict between good and evil going on around our protagonists. Lost Stars ist zwar "nur" ein Jugendbuch, doch es gehört zu den bisher besten Werke des Projekts JOURNEY TO THE FORCE AWAKENS und es ist womöglich sogar das beste Star Wars Jugendbuch, das bisher veröffentlicht wurde (Werke der Star Wars Legends eingeschlossen).
