Umibe no Etranger is a BL that does not fetishize gays. To those not that familiar with the genre this statement much not be telling much, but let me tell you that there’s just a few BLs that successfully don’t do that, even if they try not to. And most don’t even try at all. The characters feel like actual people having actual feelings instead of the usual “we’re all gay because the plot said so”. That’s not to say that Etranger doesn’t have any sexual content at all, but even that is more realistic and believable than the common “yamete kudasai senpai” bullshittery. With regards to change, it would hardly be an exaggeration to say that the younger and older Mios are effectively different people. From his temperament to his physical posture and body language, it’s clear that his time with Shun has dramatically impacted him. Shun, by contrast, remains much the same. That’s not to say that he comes across as a flat character without dimensions so much as his core flaws and anxieties remain relatively consistent across the span of the film. There are some mentions throughout of his difficult history with his family, and these add context to his actions although much remains subtle about the presentation. The film isn’t vague by any means; it certainly gives the viewer the bare minimum information needed— but little beyond it. Your mileage may vary on if this is executed effectively or if Shun’s character could have still used more fleshing out.

El que a su hijo mayor le gusten los hombres crea cierta controversia. No es que lo desprecien por ello, sino que me ha dado la impresión de que quieren entenderlo y arreglar el pasado.

Mais j'imagine que cela se base surtout sur la ration famille/Shun donc c'est normal. Hablando un poco de la pareja de Mio y Shun , me encantan , pero hay una escena en este tomo (específicamente en el cap 3) que me pareció demasiado problemática y me conflictúa que nadie este hablando de ella por que piensan que es sexy y normal que pase y de verdad me preocupa ese pensamiento, no entiendo por que la pusieron y creo que es demasiado innecesaria , arruino el tomo. Esa escena siempre vuelve a mi cabeza y hace que cada día me guste menos la pareja pero de hay recuerdo todo lo demás y la muy pero MUY buena representación y conflictos muy bien llevado en los otros tomos que pues no lo se es algo que lo llevo pensando desde hace meses por eso creo que este y el cuarto tomo son muy malos, por que me arruinaron un poquito a la pareja ,el cuarto no por que sea problemático si no por que creo que pasaron demasiadas cosas y no tenia sentido muchas de las cosas que pasaban en el tomo .
