About this deal

Halajan, an older Afghan woman who has lived through different political regimes and strives to be herself while respecting the laws and traditions of her present-day world

With the even more recent troubles going on in Israel at the moment, it made this story have even more of an impact. Whilst the author doesn’t go into the greatest of details of the war itself and the horrific killings, through the characters, you feel every ounce of fear and despair that they are going through. I would like to think that this book also highlights the plight of many refugees in having to leave their country in the hope of somewhere safe for their family. I could have literally cried so many times at the way people trying to leave are treat as well as the welcome they get in other countries. If this doesn’t open your eyes and make you more conscious of what these people have gone through, then I don’t know what else will. This in no way shys away from the reality of people's lifes and the treatment in which women are living in. This is very honest and some of the issues raised tell the reader about the extremes to which women are treated and the punishments , about the risk of death and abduction to slavery. As these five discover there's more to one another than meets the eye, they form a unique bond that will for ever change their lives and the lives of many others. Kat, Sunny’s friend from America, is wrapping up her year-long stay in the land of her birth, but is facing some unfinished business.Personally, I think that anyone from Asia or the Middle East will be able to see through the propaganda this book is. In short, the author is an American woman looking to cash in on her foreign holiday experience. If you’re looking for a an easy and warm-hearted read that gives an insight into the struggles of women living in a country with a culture that is far different to ours, then The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul is worth a read. ZARA, promised in marriage to a violent man she's never met, arrives at the coffee shop seeking sanctuary.

Ask yourself the following questions. If you answer yes to a question, proceed to the next question. If you answer no at any time, drop this book immediately and find a clerk to direct you to nonfiction or action/adventure books. This book is an eye opener, and even though it is fiction, it is well researched and based on facts. Having spent some time in Azerbaijan, I am aware of some of the elements of being a Muslim and the role of women in Muslim culture. I gained more information about Muslims in this novel. And finally there’s elderly den mother Halajan, whose secret new hobby is itself an act of rebellion. So basically, the book is meant to be all about sisterhood, five very different women coming together in dangerous circumstances. The Afghan women are incredibly poorly written, particularity Yasmin, she is mainly used as a prop by Sunny, a plot device to show what a compassionate woman Sunny is, rather than a character in her own right. Both Halajan and Yasmin are comprised of clichés and are two dimensional. If you wanna go blunt...This book basically focuses on Sunny and her coffee shop...It's like watching someone's life that isn't all that exciting either. She is torn between two guys (okay, it's bloody obvious who she goes with) and then there are her friends who are all submains without much about them. I mean there are smatterings but not enough to make me feel happy...Again they feel fluffy. Sunny, the proud proprietor, who needs an ingenious plan - and fast - to keep her café and customers safe...
