About this deal

International career: Won the first of 29 caps against Holland in Rotterdam, in the 1982 European Championship Qualifier, when a little-known youngster, by the name of Ruud Gullit, scored Holland's second goal in a 2-1 win. Played in all three games in Euro '88, and finished his international career the following year with his final cap against West Germany at Lansdowne Road. Things were never the same for Tony at Spurs after Burkinshaw left. Despite the excellent league campaign of 1984-85 the feeling always persisted that new manager Peter Shreeves was on borrowed time.

Tony’s career with us didn’t get off to a great start, as he had a serious pelvic injury, and Tony said that the Club was very supportive in getting him fit. He was 24 by the time he broke into the first team, which is relatively old to start playing at the top level. Coming from non-league football goes one of two ways – either you become a better player because you play with better players, or you are out of your depth. We were favourites and played well most of the game but Manchester City got a goal and we got edgy. We were fortunate to get an equaliser in the end." If I don’t make it, I thought, there’ll be something else. I’d done my teaching [qualification] , I got that behind me. So I thought, I’d nothing to lose, see how it goes.Galvin is currently 67 years old. He stands at 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs around 75 kg. His zodiac sign is Cancer. It wasn’t all that easy being Irish, either, in Thatcher’s Britain. And if you happened to be one of those Irishmen who turned down the chance to play for England – ‘well England B’ – then heaven help you. Anyway, started off with the usual playing stats (if you’re that interested google them!). Born in Huddersfield (he’s exactly a week younger than me!), and he is one of a very few footballers who went to University, studied Russian and intended to become a teacher. You might argue that these conditions are the same for all artists, which indeed they are, but because of the ever changing ways of releasing music over the past decades, the consequences are quite remarkable in that the more albums you have released, the more sales you lose by being under and in between levels. I regularly ask people if they crawled when they were a baby? It’s quite common to hear that they didn’t. Sometimes when you don’t crawl you can miss out on some basic movement patterns. And missing these movement patterns at this critical early time can have an impact on you, in all sorts of ways.

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do). He’s being a little unfair on himself – as the evidence in the clip above shows. If it hadn’t been for Galvin’s run, Villa’s wouldn’t have happened. So, it’s a proud moment, as was ’82, a second successive Cup win in a year when Tottenham also reached the League Cup final, were narrowly beaten by Barcelona in the Cup Winners Cup semi-finals and were genuine challengers for the league. You can understand why. These days when Tottenham or Ireland fans think of Tony Galvin, they remember the marauding runs down the wing, the decorated CV, FA Cup medals from ’81 and ’82, the UEFA Cup win in ’84, the heroic displays in Euro 88. Even if the world knows him largely for what he achieved with a football between 1981 and ’88, you can’t pin a label on him – remembering that the majority of his working life was spent as an educator rather than a player. Bobby Robson’s men came into the game against the Republic of Ireland as favourites to win – always the worst possible scenario for an England fan. As one myself I can tell you that our default position is to wish for too much in public through bravado alone but expect very little in private. It’s not the despair – I can take the despair – it’s the hope I can’t stand, as an out of breath John Cleese once said on film.
