About this deal

Spring Story (1980) – Wilfred Toadflax enjoys a picnic and a surprise for his birthday at Bluebell Bank. Poppy and Dusty have seen other so often. Dusty wishes to propose to Poppy. Wilfred and Primrose try to bring the couple together. Finally comes the day of the wedding. Unfortunately, Wilfred's blunder causes the wedding raft to drift down the stream, away from the bride, but Wilfred eventually manages to catch the raft and the wedding is saved. We very much hope that visitors to Epping Forest can retrace Mum’s steps through the forest at High Beech, and hopefully find inspiration from the landscape through the seasons, just as she did all those years ago.”

I guess I always come to these books expecting some kind of conflict - which is typically a given element of any story. Yet I'm realizing that the Brambly stories are more concerned with recording the doings of a community rather than creating some grand narrative. If you're looking for main characters, there really aren't any, and the mice go about their business with no hinderances, delays, or natural predators. Instead, this is an ensemble piece showing a warm, rustic, and healthy community that comes together around the two great unifying factors: food, and dance. Of any of the seasonal stories, this entry probably depicts those factors the best, as it's entirely devoted to showing the effort it takes to prepare for a grand ball, and how that effort is handsomely rewarded. The Complete Brambly Hedge (1999) — 1 volume, produced for The Book People/Ted Smart by HarperCollins (7.75x10in) They carefully make the most amazing courses and joyfully eat fantastic meals. It's wonderful and I was in love. I don’t think I’d realized how much I imprinted on the visual style and artistic themes until I saw them again as an adult. The rich yet soft colors! The light and shadow! The natural themes! The ornate and intricate detail-filled pictures! The cutaway views of houses built into trees and stumps! The food! The story follows the life of a few families through a whole year. It is divided into different seasons, so we have 4 parts: Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer. My favorites were Autumn and Spring, yes I must admit I am a Spring baby through and through. Poppy is very busy and overworked looking after her babies. Mr Apple and many other mice help clean and refurbish some his old rooms for the naming ceremony, trying to keep it a secret surprise for Poppy. After a lot of work, the new house is ready for the celebration.

A Year in Brambly Hedge (2010) — 4 book box set containing the seasonal first four books (5.75x6.93in)Despite our concerns about the condition of the tree, it was deemed to be in very good health considering the damage, with plenty of new growth in the upper branches,” he said. The City of London Corporation, which looks after Epping Forest, “are now aware of its little literary connection”. The Four Seasons of Brambly Hedge was one of my favorite books when I was little. Those little mice were the cutest thing ever, their adventures were always dreamy and the illustrations were phenomenal. The High Hills (1986) – Wilfred is determined to find some treasure in the hills above Brambly Hedge. The books, whose first titles were published in 1980, are written and illustrated by Barklem. The first four books follow the seasonal pattern of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Her later four books follow the mice's various adventures and activities.

Summer Story (1980) – The mice celebrate a special wedding, and everyone takes part in the preparations. Sea Story (1990) – Dusty Dogwood, Poppy Eyebright, Primrose Woodmouse and Wilfred Toadflax sail down river to retrieve salt from the sea mice. Midwinter's Day is coming. Primrose and Wilfred are assigned to recite the Midwinter Poem, and they discover a secret staircase concealed in the attic and many old rooms within. They finally stumble down a secret tunnel making it in time for the Midwinter celebrations, but they keep the old rooms a secret. The Brambly Hedge Treasury (1999) — 1 volume containing The Secret Staircase, The High Hills, and an introduction with select illustrations from the first four books (~8.5x11 in)Barklem spent five years on research before she started to write her stories about the mice of Brambly Hedge. Her interest in natural history and traditional rural customs and crafts has spilled over into these chronicles of hedgerow life. She lived with her husband and children near Epping Forest in England. Brambly Hedge is a series of illustrated children's books by Jill Barklem, recounting the adventures of a community of mice who live together in the tranquil surroundings of the English countryside. The writer described Brambly Hedge as a loving and caring society. The tales involve conflict resolution within nature or exploration, and/or the adventures of working together to achieve a common goal. There are no unkind characters or predators.
