About this deal

Woolly, (the spider) and Tig (the three-year-old owner of the spider) arrived at CBeebies a couple of months ago. Since then they've become the talk of playgrounds everywhere and the most-watched show on iplayer week after week. Spider monkeys are big! While perhaps not as bulky as the baboons and mandrills, for an animal this elegant and nimble, they are very impressive. Spider monkey describes any New World monkey species that belongs to the genus Ateles. It is characterized by the long limbs, dexterous prehensile tail, male-centered social structure, and high intelligence.

Tig - a real three-year-old with real three-year old strops - finds all the experiences pretty challenging, but after a few wise words from Woolly, she manages to turn each situation around and actually enjoy it. They will also shake tree branches to scare threats away. 9. They come down from the trees sometimes. To eat soil. Agnew, Corrie. "A spider monkey's life in the canopy". Demand Media. PawNation . Retrieved November 10, 2013.Mexican spider monkey ( Ateles geoffroyi vellerosus): This critically endangered subspecies is native to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Indeed, the spider’s evolution into some 40,000 known species coincides with the diversification of silk and what that’s allowed in web designs, each type enabling a species to exploit a new ecological niche. Spider webs can be found in almost every imaginable place — even underwater — and have allowed spiders to populate every continent except frigid Antarctica. And there’s probably some spider out there working on how to exploit that last frontier (maybe with a penguin-snaring web?). Schneider, H. (2000). "The current status of the New World monkey phylogeny". Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências. 72 (2): 165–172. doi: 10.1590/S0001-37652000000200005. PMID 10932115. The end of the tail is sensitive, with reduced fur, and incredibly strong. Unusual among monkeys, this tail can support the weight of the animal as it dangles, foraging for food. 3. They move using brachiation Spiders in the Desidae family, among others, construct these webs by extruding a gooey, raw silk through thousands of tiny spigots aligned along an abdominal plate, then using the bristles on a rear leg to comb it into woolly strands. The cribellum organ evolved early on in arachnids, and its presence (or absence) is a distinguishing feature in taxonomy. (For more about local spider evolution, read Bay Nature’s“ Evolution’s Tangled Web.”)

Ford, S.M. (1986). "Systematics of the New World monkeys". In Swindler, D.R.; Erwin, J. (eds.). Comparative Primate Biology, Volume I: Systematics, Evolution and Anatomy. New York: Alan R. Liss. pp.73–135. They also have three tiny claws at the end of their legs, which help them hunt. The sides of their jaws may have a small raised orange spot or ‘boss’, too. Six of the seven species are either endangered or critically endangered. The other species is just vulnerable to extinction. This animal has a breeding season that lasts all year round. The female monkey has wide latitude to choose which male she wants to mate with. However, males can be quite aggressive, sometimes killing the unrelated child of a female it is currently mating with.

Of the new world monkeys, the Atelidae family contains the largest members, such as the howler, the woolly, and the spider monkeys. Campbell, Christina J. (September 25, 2008). Spider Monkeys: The Biology, Behavior and Ecology of the Genus Ateles . Cambridge University Press. ISBN 978-1-316-58310-4. The spider monkey genus belongs to the family Atelidae, which also includes howler monkeys and woolly monkeys. This is the only family of primates in the world with full prehensile tails.

Spider Monkey Scientific Classification

That’s a phrase you probably don’t hear every day. Unless you’re a spider monkey behaviourist, and you’re trying to identify the sex of your subject. Spider monkeys live in social groups of up to 35 individuals high in the canopy of rainforests, where they forage for food. They diet on fresh fruit and nuts, but will also eat leaves, insects, bird eggs, honey and occasionally flowers.
