Codenames Duet does a great job of replicating the gameplay of the original for two players and is a far superior option to the two-player mode in the original. However, it can be a bit more stilted in terms of flow. As both players are taking turns giving clues and guessing them, there is no downtime for the clue giver to think. This, in turn, seems to result in longer pauses, as the clue giver desperately tries to link their words together and avoid the three assassins. When using the mission map, an incorrect guess might use up two timer tokens. This happens if you exceed the acceptable number of incorrect guesses. If you have only one token when you must give up two, you skip the sudden death turn and lose the game.This one involves less word association and more “party”. Telestrations acts like a mix between Pictionary and the Telephone Game. The spymaster’s goal is to choose a word that somehow connects to the tile word(s) they want their teammate to guess, and the number indicates how many tiles relate to the clue. So, if I was the spymaster and wanted my operatives to guess “ice cream” and “brownie,” and there were no other sweet foods on the board, I might say, “dessert, two.” As spymaster, that’s all I’m allowed to say. I can’t clarify or give addendums, aside from spelling the word if it’s a homophone—like “read” as opposed to “reed.” If you already know Codenames, you still need to learn these rules.
