The classic Dunkel, the one enjoyed in Germany for centuries is simply a lager, our ABK Dunkel beer is a good example of this. However, in a broader sense, Dunkel literally means ‘dark’ in german so technically you could have Dunkel ale but this would not be the classic style that people are usually referring too. Is Dunkel a wheat beer? More recently, craft breweries outside of Germany have begun to develop their own dark wheat beers to rival Bavaria’s dunkelweizen. What Does Dunkelweizen Taste Like?

German-Style Dunkel

Straight from Erding, Germany, Erdinger is now one of the biggest Germany weissbiers on the market. It is exported across the globe and they produce several high quality beers. One of them just happens to be this one you’re reading about right now. The Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel was created in 1989 as a birthday present from the Brewmasters of Erdinger to the breweries owner, Werner Brombach. The present was so well received that the Dunkel was marketed just one year later in 1990. Lighter-colored lagers were not common until the later part of the 19th century when technological advances made them easier to produce. How it tastes: Generally, Weissbier has a strong yeast note, and the yeast also makes it cloudy. The selected top-fermented yeast is responsible for notes like banana, berries and cloves. Citrus aromas in wheat beer come from hops.

Rauchbier is a German lager with a distinctly smoked taste due to the malted barley being dried over an open flame. German noble hops provide 21 IBU of bittering, which is enough to balance the malt and not make the beer seem sweet. However, the beer should not have a bitter finish and aftertaste. No aroma or flavor hops are needed; the malt should be foremost in the balance. While Radler beer has similarities to shandy, it has a 50/50 mix of lager and a carbonated fruit beverage. On the other hand, Shandy is almost always composed of beer and lemonade and tends to have a higher alcohol content than Radler as it is mostly beer. The taste should definitely tip the scale toward the deep, rich Munich malt character, leaving the only work for hops a perceptible but slight bitterness with no true hop flavor noticeable. Dunkel is also widespread in parts of Franconia, for example the Franconian Switzerland, where it has been originally the most common beer type.
