About this deal

Holbeins are a soft-core pencil and the exposed core will break off if you drop the pencil onto a hard floor. These artist-grade colors can be more expensive as they contain more pigment and are of higher quality. Durability We’ll rate these colors well above average in terms of performance, meaning that it’s superb enough to deal with the needs of most artists until it’s some serious business. So honestly, I’ve never really understood why pencil people differentiate wax from oil because wax is made from oil.

Not a hard, crumbly, brittle pencil, but something oil based and stiffer. The firmer the pencil, the more control you’ll get from it. The yellows to orange are the fewest in number and the least impressive with a few colors that are pretty darned close to each other. Originally, The Art Gear Guide and COLORED PENCIL Magazine had arranged to feature the Holbein Artists Colored Pencils in the August issue, however, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Holbein review had to be temporarily put on hold. Despite this, I have finally got round to reviewing the Holbein colored pencil, so here it is and I hope it has been worth the delay. They make a complete range of pinks and magentas plus a beautiful selection of reds with no overlaps or missing values. We deem it the most comprehensive set of colors for a beginner and casual artist. As for performance, the colors are quite excellent as the pigments are saturated and blend excellently.

Holbein Artist Colored Pencil Sets

Hello, Derwent? Are you listening? Is your gray “Mist” cooler than “Moonstone”? Why do you vex me so? The color selection is vast as the sets are quite large so most people should find the colors that they need. They are very expensive, however, so they may be out of some people’s colored pencil budgets. They come with a round barrel, have a 3.8 mm core, and are available in sets of 100 and 150. Visual Appeal – 4/5 I’ve spent the bulk of my professional career illustrating for research and medical supply companies. I’m used to weeding my way through dense scientific jargon.

These are some of the smoothest colored pencils we have come across. The application is extremely buttery and soft and they are a lot of fun to experiment with. That being said, they do struggle a little bit in keeping a sharp point due to being so soft which can make them a bit challenging to use in areas that require close detail. The Holbein Artist Colored pencils attempt to stand out in the competitive premium-priced colored pencil category by providing interesting cores and huge color selections. We really could tell the difference that the wax/oil hybrid core brings to the table. By capturing the best of oils and the best of waxes, you can take your art game to the next level. Holbein, like every other pencil in the world has some wax in it and some oil in it. They’re soft which means they’ve got more wax than oil. In general, pencils with a higher oil to wax ratio are hard pencils. Pencils with more wax tend to be softer pencils. Wax, oil, hard, soft— it’s all about what you like. There are no villains here. Then, there are watercolor pencils where the binder is water-soluble, and the pigments can mix with water. They contain a dry watercolor pigment, which can be used along with water and brushes. If you're looking for unique palettes, the Tombow Irojiten Color Pencils are the right choice. Featuring vibrant colors, great blending capabilities, and unique palette options, these pencils can help you explore new artistic possibilities. In our experience, we couldn’t help but draw parallels between brushes and these pencils. And don’t worry, the lacquer covering is great at preventing the colors from spreading and making it all messy. FOR VANILLA STUDENTS: Holbein makes their own version of many of our favorite Prismacolors including: Indigo, Dark Purple, White, Cream, Limepeel, Olive, Prussian Green, Carmine, Muted Turquoise, Slate Grey, Greyed Lavender, Yellowed Orange, and Goldenrod. Holbein Lay-down: What’s not so great though is that the pencils don’t come with a color chart and that’s not suitable for many professionals. So to say “wax, fats, and oils” is like saying “here’s my bike, bicycle, and my thingamabob with two wheels which I pedal around town.”
